Title: Did the roof aerial change places with the DBW?
Post by: GastronomicKleptomaniac on 09 December 2023, 07:33:44
I've just acquired another project... W plate 3.0 special. It's as rough as a badger's backside but as I peered admiringly out of the upstairs window I realised it has a grommet in the front centre of the roof... But nothing at the back end at all, no aerial, grommet, or lump of filler.

Both my 03 Special and my old 02 civvy spec had a little one at the back of the roof.

Did they change between the model years, or was the little one an option? I assume the grommet is covering where the aerial for some bit of plod kit was precisely and carefully fitted.

Yes I live a FASCINATING life.

Different forces stuck different things in different places.

On civvy cars that roof antenna is for the phone aerial as the radio one is the rear screen.

But plods were never ones to pass up a free hole for poking wires through :D
It may have simply been an unmarked taxi for the boss and his guests.

Ahhhhh so no phone kit fitted then, one presumes. Impossible to tell. It has been thoroughly de-plodded, which is unimportant.

Radio aerial in screen eh... Every day's a school day!

Is the radio aerial always in the rear screen on both saloons and estates?
AIUI there's a radio antenna amplifier. Where is it?

Saloon only has FM/AM aerial in rear screen.  Estate has a whip on the back of the roof....

Some dealership used outside fitters to install GM phone kits,, or Phone kits of choice, aerial were fitted either front or rear,,

Service vehicles had aerials fitted wherever the force or service requirements demand, also depending on equipment fitted,  Covert had aerials+ amplifier fitted in boots, even on rear parcel shelfs.

Saw some interesting communication equipment fitted in cars for HMG, and aerial in funny places..

Under the rear parcel shelf on the saloon.

My 2.2 has particularly bad radio reception, have tried various antennas since the original fell apart, any ideas where the problem may lie? (Original radio)

Saloon or estate?
Both have a plug at the back of the head unit and ia connection in the divers kick panel.
Estate has another connection in the roof at the top of the C pillar, and the saloon connects to the amplifier near the right hand C Pillar from memory.

Amplifier is a slim silver box about 5" long and connects to the rear glass. Estate has a traditional whip aerial and no amplifier.

Radio antenna should be incorporated into the rear window then.

Mine used to give poor reception so I did the following upgrade.

Replaced the original roof aerial with a solid short whip...it had an amplifier in the base which required a 12 volt feed.

Reconfigured the nav connection from the drivers kick panel to a front screen mounted small mag mount which gave really strong signal.

Quite a fiddly job as the nav connection was an F plug if I remember correctly so needed some ingenuity on the cable connections but got there eventually .

Both gave a really strong signal and whip aerial on roof could be unscrewed as required

Mine’s a saloon
So usual causes are a dirty rear window (on the inside, not outside) or damage to the rear window element.

I have seen the amplifier/booster fail that sits on top of the metal parcel shelf but under the carpet bit of said shelf.

If its far worse when the HRW is on, check the connections for that, and the 0V connections for the amp.

So what is the little antenna on the roof for?

Phone antenna assuming that the car was either optioned with a head unit with built in phone(SIM card slot) or pre wired for a hands free kit... Nokia kits were popular at the time.

What head unit is fitted?

So what is the little antenna on the roof for?
Phone. Most were factory fitted as part of the (almost standard) phone prewiring kit, even if a phone or HU with integrated phone wasn't fitted.  3.2 Elites also have the GPS unit there as well, signified by a larger base to the antenna.

Again,

What head unit did it leave the factory with?

CDR 2005

According to the 2003 sales brochure, all Omegas' regardless of head unit, left the factory with telephone prewiring as standard.

This would have included the aerial on the roof on saloons. :y

So it'll just be a phone antenna then, and the cable is left loose in the drivers kick panel.

My brochure covers the end of production, it isn't even a NCO they're just fitted.

There were some subtle changes when production switched from 2.0/2.5/3.0 to 2.2/2.6/3.2. Quite possible that earlier facelifts had pre wiring as an option rather than standard.

My pre face lift estate had a very short aerial fitted at the rear, ex plod but no sign of it being a patrol model.

Different aerials for different jobs. They probably used the whole that was there for the factory radio aerial.
