Astra G question
« on: 20 November 2014, 12:52:08 »

Hi guys, it happens my father had a crash yesterday, destroyed his old faithfull veccy, or as you call it - cavalier - which was BTW relly mint example. Well he's fine luckily and needs a car, as he said, he'd like to buy an astra G which are quite cheap bargain. I would really appreciate any opinion on astra G, what engine to buy, reliability, problem, bugs and if there's an easy option to see/clear the fault codes, like on our omegas. Thanks in advance guys

Pretty solid motors in reality, 1.6 16V is what I would consider the entry level.

No huge issues, early ones very occasionally had power steering rack/pump problems but pretty much all those would have been addressed by now.

Front brake pipes can corrode, particularly where they pass under the inner wing.

Cam belt and water pumps need changing at the usual intervals.

Seen a few 1.4/1.6 have an ECU fault which can cost circa 300 notes to repair.

Just don't get one with an autobox.

I did (as I have to drive auto) and even with a 1.6 emgine the acceleration was, well, really shite! Scarily shite in fact.

Depends which 1.6 as the 1.6 16V actually suits an auto well and accelerates well to, the 8V would be a different matter  ;D

Nothing to do with the auto box. Any 1.6 would struggle with that fat bastid driving. ;D

It's a shame they didn't do the C20NE in the Astra G.  115BHP and 8v reliability was awesome in the Cavalier days.  Emissions controls I suppose?
