You'll all hate me for this, but..

....I actually like smart motorways. There..I've said it. Traffic flows freely, lunatics know they can't drive at dangerous speeds and it all seems rather civilised.
Don't know if it's just my age, or maybe it's bad at really busy times, but when I've been on the managed part of the 62, it's been fine.

They are all well & good until there's an almighty smash, everything comes to a halt across all lanes (including the hard shoulder) and the emergency services have to get to it. With em now using the hard shoulder as a running lane it makes it 10 times harder for them to get to the scene!

Don't hate you for it... When there are no issues or obstructions they run well. However.........

They work well. Unless you're plod looking to get somewhere fast. Or you brake down and can't coast to emergency refuge.

Or you're not paying attention to the breakdown/lane closed signs in front of you.

So, they work OK, until something goes wrong. Then they're really, really crap.
But it doesn't matter, because nothing much goes wrong on Britain's well designed/built/maintained motorways.

Clearly a large number of drivers on the M42 need to have some additional 'read the f'ing gantry sign and obey it' training....

One day someone will realise that the motorway death toll has risen because the 'I've got to go faster than you in a closed lane' brigade are in full flight.

I was sceptical, but have now decided that I'd rather been moving at 50mph with the occasional "motorway shagged day", rather than the previous every day is "motorway shagged day".

As VXL V6 suggests, it does rely on the public being able to leave arsebook/tawtter/texts alone for long enough to read the gantry signs though...
