General Discussion Area / Vans
« on: 16 January 2024, 12:27:34 »
I posted a reply in the  welcome section regards the CF van.

At work we had a fleet of CF vans for daily deliveries and on occasions I used the works CF pickup or a CF van to go pick parts up.

1st drive in one I locked up all 4 brakes just getting used to the van (Quite impressive but totally unexpected.)   :-X

At the time I had (and passed my test in )a HA Viva van so obviously the CF was the biz with the size/more power and those brakes. ::)

As times went by the vans went FWD and the CF stopped production for things like the Rascal van. :-\

Reading a car mag one day there was an artictle about drag racing vans.  So 1st thought was a Rascal with a V8 in the rear for the rear wheels. but keep the original setup to drive it there as a FWD.

The dream never really went away and I got to know a compamy in Doncaster (BH Autokraft) who built V8 dragsters etc. After a guilded tour it seemed putting a V8 into anything was basically limited by imgination and finance. (plus ability and physical dimentions)

The finance and time have never been there for what I wanted to build, but if I had the money would I build a dragster van, Not sure.

But having seen some of the crate engines available these days and watching the American TV progs (Counts Kustoms and Gas Monkey Garage, Diesel Brothers etc)

I have seen a nice choice of engines and reckon I would stick with GM.

https://nelsonracingengines.com/collections/ls-motors

So many creative people and companies out there these days I dont know what I would build if I had the money.

Would be a choice of the van or a Bandit Trams Am at the moment. :y

General Car Chat / Its That Time of Year Again - Breakdown Cover
« on: 07 December 2023, 14:33:43 »
My renewal is the 31st Dec

I have the full package with the AA

Breakdown
Home Start
Forward Travel
Plus thier Garage Cover.

Paid £211 after wrangling last year :y

Quote for renewal came through a week ago @ £487ish :-X

Phone call from them today they came down to £395 :-X

They told me this was my 13th year as a Gold member but wont budge on price.

In the end they have offered to price match whatever I get back to them with - How can they price match when they know full well others dont have all the services I require (Garage cover for me)

End resesult is I get the best price for Breakdown, Home start, Relay and Recovery etc and they will match it and then add back on the Garage cover.

If I was a new customer they would be throwing discounts at me to get me as a customer.  Why cant they look after the customers that have stayed so long.

No call outs in 18 months and that was only to them fitting cheap nasty batterys.  So I reckon I deserve a discount like we have a NCD with car insurance.

Any thought on best breakdown service or best comparison sites?

Many Thanks in Advance. :y

General Discussion Area / Caustic Soda
« on: 06 December 2023, 10:54:16 »
There was a thread not so long ago regards removing oil from a drive. (I searched but could not find it)

So today I came accros some Caustic Soda in a container looking a bit worse for wear.  I was going to dump it but decided to look up its uses.  (we used to use it a lot at work (Food Factory) with boiling water to clean the concrete floors.

So Googled it.

CLEANING & SANITIZING (dustbins, kennels, stables, driveways etc) Add 1-2 tablespoons of Caustic Soda per 5 litres of water. Scrub soiled area with solution, then wash down thoroughly with water. Removes oil and soot. PAINT STRIPPING Add 250g Caustic Soda to 1 litre of cold water.

https://www.google.com/search?q=caustic+soda+how+to+use&client=firefox-b-d&sca_esv=588338046&sxsrf=AM9HkKnFMvwucztPBR4eEdbcNUPM3vHlOg%3A1701859241237&ei=qU9wZfP5DaiqhbIPhd-0wAU&ved=0ahUKEwiz8p_cz_qCAxUoVUEAHYUvDVgQ4dUDCBE&uact=5&oq=caustic+soda+how+to+use&gs_lp=Egxnd3Mtd2l6LXNlcnAiF2NhdXN0aWMgc29kYSBob3cgdG8gdXNlMgsQABiABBiKBRiRAjIGEAAYFhgeMgYQABgWGB4yBhAAGBYYHjIGEAAYFhgeMgYQABgWGB4yBhAAGBYYHjIGEAAYFhgeMgYQABgWGB4yBhAAGBYYHkiUWlCxDljlVHABeAGQAQCYAVegAfkFqgECMTC4AQPIAQD4AQHCAgoQABhHGNYEGLADwgINEAAYgAQYigUYQxiwA8ICBRAAGIAEwgIIEAAYFhgeGAriAwQYACBBiAYBkAYK&sclient=gws-wiz-serp

Sorry if it was mentioned in the OP but the bit about the paint stipping was also  interesting.

General Discussion Area / Couriers - Pickup.
« on: 04 December 2023, 13:32:18 »
I decided againt keeping an item I bought (Not cheap)

Item , never opened so brand new - started a return but had a question.  Spoke to the company 1st thing this morning.  No problem at all and as expected I will be returning the item at my own cost for a full refund

My dilema is which company, I checked a comparison site (based on 1 metre/1KG)
Prices start from £3ish, filters next day/2 day etc raise the cost.

DHL - Evri - Royal Mail adds come up in the list, But there no cover mentioned over £20

If carriage is paid by credit card is there any sort of insurance cover with that?

TB mentioned in another post about RM doing offers on pickup.

Ebay last week I bought an item for £23 Delivered.  No Tracking given but set for Mon to Fri this week  - Still Waiting for delivery. (But was dispatched last week) :y

This week same person and details.£58.65  Last week when I ordered they had 2 in stock and now 1 left.

I can understand adding maybe 10%, or a new price for new stock, but that is ridiculous.

Other items I have bought for the "Girls" the prices have shot up.

I have bought the same thing multiple times and often stick it in the basket till I need it or the price drops.  But it makes me wonder if the prices are manipulated per customer.

I saw something that would suit my Ex.  Sent her a link to see what she thought, the item was £23 (not the same item mentioned above) she got back to that night and thouth it was great.  The day after  it was £29.95 -Dis the price go up because it was in my basket? :-\

So

I decided to upgrade to a new PC ::)  (Simply because there are new parts kicking about) ::)

Spent a couple of weeks doing home work and checking specs.

Worked out a budget (Then ignored it)

The critia I set for the Motherboard was the problem.   of my 4 main points I required  90% of them ticked 3 out of the 4 boxes., the ones that ticked all the boxes were either E-ATX or tooooo exspensive.

So a while back I bought a new Asus case -
FU1 - Then realised I wanted 2 x 5.25 bays for my existing optical drives. :-[
Now have a eye on a different one (Still considering)

FU2 - Should have read the forums 1st

Then read up on the heat issues.
Allways been happy with air coolers (Hyper 212) Google sugested a better one so bought that.
Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE CPU Air Cooler
Amazon staff/customer had allready helped them selves to the fitting kit and dual fans before delivery.
Ordered an AIO 360 - That apparently turned up a day early - I have a pic of it but not the actual item (Seems a lot of items were nicked that day arround the delivery route.)

After an hour on the phone to ACS (Amazon Customer Services) they refunded me for the AIO. (Cant fault them on that)

So at this point, I have the wrong case, The wrong cooler (Hyper 212) No RAM/Mobo/CPU/M2 drives (Well 1 or 2 GEN 3) :-\

I have a 6GB 1060 & 12GB 3060 plus an Intel 16GB from previous issues, Because I bought the A770 I got myself a new PSU as there were not enough power cables for the new GPU. (WRONG - when I stripped and cleaned the PC they were under the back plate where I had stored them :-[)

So rather than screw up again (As I am getting so good at it) I went and orded the new Motherboard.  Leaving the RAM/CPU & NVME choices till later. (They are in the basket ready tp be paid for)

FU3 - After reading loads of manuals and compairing specs -  I ORDERED THE WRONG F-E-C-K-ING MOTHERBOARD.

Sorted the board issue, they are sending the higher spec one and trying to retract the 1st delivery (Have paid for both - will be refunded for the 1st one & ended up with free DPD express delivery)

Wonder if the delivery will screw up tomorrow.

The rest of the items will be ordered and hopefull turnup before the snow arrives (Dont want the the driver slipping in the snow and hurting him/her self)

The Saga continues - Tune into episode 2 next week. ::)

26th Oct I ordered a cordles Sonic Sanding thing - Was left outside with out a knock on the door.

Then ordered a CPU cooler - no knock on the door but left outside - packeage not boxed or bagged - No seal or cellafane wrapping,  Parts missing from delivery. (Sorted immediately over the phone)

Reordered a AIO Cooler due for delivey by 10PM Friday (Today)  saw an email saying it was delivered at 5:11pm last night.  no knock on the door and no item left outside .

Been on to Amazon Customer Services.  Been passed round a bit from 1 department to another - currently waiting for someone to get back to me before 7pm.

Whilst on FB our local village forum had quite a few posts regards Amazon, some throwing items over the fence, 1 said they had a note could not deliver due to an issue, 1 dumped behind a bin even though they were at home, and 2 more saying shown as delivered but never recieved thier package.

Evri has a complaints page on FB and the reports are shocking, our village has nothing but praise for the local delivery team, but whilst my driver was on holiday, my neighber caught the stand in driver takeing a pic of the package and then picking it up - thier excuce was they were putting it in a safer place.  When my usual driver returned they said the standin drivers were stealing allsorts but was hard to prove.
