I currently have a Virgin Media package that includes phone line with free weekend calls and XL TV for which my monthly bill is always around £41. Decided it was time to upgrade so phoned them up and told the sales advisor that I no longer needed the phone line (never use it and it's £13.95pm) but wanted to add 10MB broadband and Tivo box. He gave me a price of £48 per month including the removal of the phone line so I agreed to go ahead. After giving me an installation date (07/01/12!!!) he said he would transfer me to the installations dept. to get the phone line cancelled. Got put through to a really helpful guy who apologised but explained that as my new order was now on their system, he couldn't cancel the phone line without cancelling the order and starting again.....hmmmm! He then told me that his installtion team were allowed to quote for upgrades and could often better the prices from the sales team by way of loyalty discounts and he could offer a discount for me as I've been with them for over 10 years. He ended up offering me the same package but keeping the phone line for £45.90 per month for 2 years. Needless to say I was well happy and accepted.
I think there's a moral to the story here which is, don't talk to the driver, talk to the oily rag.
