My garage said I have a small oil leak but can't pinpoint it due to build up of gunk in the area caused by the leak. They've suggested I get the engine steam cleaned to clear all the crap away so they can find it but I'm a bit undecided. Is it safe to clean modern engines by steam cleaning and isn't there a chance it could damage electrics and sensors etc.

Anyone able to advise?

There's always the risk that some moisture gets under an electrical connector somewhere and causes a problem with aggressive cleaning of the engine bay, but I'm guessing the leak is likely to be below the level of most of the gadgetry and a careful clean of the engine from head downwards shouldn't be too risky. avoid blasting the alternator and starter.

I find a spray of engine degreaser, let it soak in for an hour then hose off with a pressure washer is adequate.

I am not a fan of steam cleaning engines on newer vehicles petrol or diesel,I would go with Kevins idea or if its localised cleaning then brake cleaner in spray form is quite good(on a cold engine)but makes sure its evaporated before starting if its a diesel.

Thanks for the reply guys but it's not a job I'd be doing myself (lack of facilities and equipment). If I get it done I would have to take it somewhere that specialises in engine steam cleaning. Might have to make a few enquiries.

Keep the pressure washer / steam cleaner away from any bearings, eg aux idler, a/c compressor, alternator etc.

Been there, done that, had to replace all the bearings 6 months later.

Paraffin,rags,a small brush is what I use.

Never understood idea to put large amounts of water underpressure in an engine bay, looking at some of Guys classic motors you could get away with it, but not modern engines full of electrical components. WD40 + old rags for me!

a good degreaser and a jet wash is ok as i do mine often to keep it looking tidy
but ive seen the pressure at some garages and to be honest its too high
