What did they ever do for us? 

The Romans built nice roads, baths and stuff, but when they left we let them fall apart.

The Danes saw that, so didn't bother building any thing. Just raped and pillaged. We stupidly thought that being nice to them and handing over lots of cash would result in them being nice to us. It didn't work.     1500 years later we made the same stupid mistake!     

The Normans carried out the first census, raised taxes off the back of it and built some nice castles.    Mostly in Wales.
