I wouldn't use a pressure washer though as you could damage something or get water ingress where it shouldn't.

Omega General Help / Re: another timeing belt issue???
« on: 18 February 2010, 12:48:11 »
I have never changed a 3.2/2.6 kit but I am pretty sure that the pulley on the right is non adjustable and you need to route the belt on from the crank anticlockwise.

Others will comment on your questions no doubt.

I found yanking the cable immediately behind the lever with a pair of pliers got the bonnet open prior to adjusting per the guide.

Thats great thanx very much for your help im definitly going to change the water pump when i do the cambelt :y

Changing water pumps when you change the cam belt is more applicable to 4 pot cars where the cam belt also drive the water pump. You have a 'fan belt' to drive your water pump on a V6  :y

So, at 80k miles do I need to or should I replace the pump when I change to cambelt on my 3.2 V6?

If its not been changed already, at 80k you should generally change it.   Only costs 25 quid and if you later need to do it you'll have a couple of hours additional labour on top.

(In the case of 4 pots it is more critical though, as if the pump fails, it will likely take out the cambelt resulting in serious engine damage)

Omega General Help / Re: Draining Battery

I once had a drained battery after two days.

The reason was I had accidently activated the boot release, and the boot light had drained the battery!! :'( :'(

When I first got my facelift I left the key in the ignition over night when it was in the garage.   Dead flat the next day. :'(

Didn't James give you a shopping list?

I would be doing the fuel filter too if we're doing a full service.  I'd also change the door check strap bushes on any new Omega.

Sump plug oring - maybe just get a spare plug in case the original is knackered.

Omega General Help / Re: tyre life expectancy

I think 25k is reasonable, but of course depends on many factors.

The Nexens that the previous owner put on my facelift estate are doing well 22k and decent amount of tread left.

Previously I got 25-30k out of a set of Khumos, and had good experience with Falkens (I think512).  Both handled fine.

My mini f/l elite is not doing so well. It has Barum's currently at 17k, will need changing soon.  Handling is ok.

Next set will either be Khumho KU31 (if I can spell it..) or Falken 452.   I don't see the point spending more.

Can you open the bonnet and go have a listen when its doing it - may help narrow down the location..

Omega General Help / Re: passed MOT and broke 100 000 miles today

Hi all,
our car passed its MOT today, although initially failed on
        nearside headlamp aim too low
         offside headlamp aim too low
offside front tyre tread depth below 1.6mm

Also advisory items of both back tyres close to 2mm tread depth, nearside front steering idler has slight play, offside headlamp needs replaced.

All in all it cost £55 for a tyre and the same for the test so we are pleased enough with the result!
In fact very pleased considering we broke 100 000 miles on the way home from the garage.

How much will it cost to replace the steering idler?
and should i consider doing the front wishbones also before replaceing the rest of the tyres?
thanks for all your previous help!

Are the front tyres worn unevenly (esp strip worn on the inner shoulder)?   If you have not had replacement wishbones, they likely will need doing and then a geometry set up afterwards.  Good investment if you are putting a new set of rubber on it.

Steering idler isn't a big job if it comes off easily - can't remember how much the part is, but don't go for the elcheapo ebay ones.

I used to get 500 miles plus on my 2.0 on a long motorway run.   In fact the V6's are not far short if you are very careful with the loud pedal.

Auto makes a lot of (adverse) difference around town, but not on motorway.

You will find the technical guides are for Omega B (Omega A was not called Omega in the UK), but you will still find people with knowledge and advice on your car so stick around :y

1988 (if correct) would be our Carlton rather than Omega.  But post a pic - someone will know.
