Post by: gavlar001 on 28 January 2020, 19:28:00
Hi everyone the cars getting there, have sorted the heater matrix and no temp display and heat in car and the gearbox issue. However i have noticed that the rear diff has a leak right where the torque converter is although ive not had it on a ramp yet.How do i know if its the lsd diff version and whats the best way to sort the leak, its more of an occasional drip. 2001 2.6 v6 auto mv6 TC onboard. Thanks Gavin 8)

The torque converter lives between the engine and the gearbox... The diff is nearly ten feet away, so unlikely to be the same leak...

But to answer your question, your car has a standard diff.

The face plate of the diff does have a tendency to leak with age and creates a nice sticky mess normally on the underside .

Removal of the plate and resealing is covered in the maintenance section and isnt a difficult job and worthwhile as it gets nice clean oil into the diff and the correct amount.

Another possible leak point is the pinion oil seal where the end of the prop shaft enters the diff. This replacement is considerably more complicated as you will need to remove the seal from the diff by undoing the retaining nut. This must be replaced in the exact same position as it retains the preload and if this isnt replicated on replacing the diff will not last many miles.

Again a thorough write up is in the maintenance guide.
