Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Anyone used a Navigon Satnav?
« on: 07 February 2010, 16:44:01 »
My bruv has just bought one from Halfords at a good price as it's last years model.

Seems to do all you might expect, but as it's new to us both we have nothing to compare it too.

Do I follow his lead or look for something better?

Just wondering, as the steering wheel controls do not have any effect and I'm thinking there is no point looking for faults if they are not compatible.

At some time in the last 10 years a different unit has been used, as there is what I belive to be a GM to ISO adapter lead stuffed in the back.

Omega General Help / Body panel swaps
« on: 18 April 2011, 09:29:46 »
Hi all,

Can anyone please confirm if a bonnet from an n reg diesel saloon is compatible with a t reg petrol estate? Whilst we are on the subject, what about the wings? And bumper?

Seems gold parts are like hens teeth, but there is one on the bay, albeit a long way away. If only mine was silver, I could have a new bonnet every day of the week ::)

Normally happens-or at least thats when I notice it-under light throttle at the point where the autobox lock-up occurs. It only lasts a couple of seconds.

No codes apart from 135 which I have learnt to ignore as it has a mind of its own.

Other issues which may be relevant are:-

1. Hissing from under breather bridge when cold. recently changed the seals and cleaned breathers, but made no difference.
2. Stutters briefly on tickover then settles down, just at the point where the temp approaches mid scale. ICV recently cleaned, made no difference.
3. Never been able to trigger rear multiram by blipping throttle, though can do so by connecting direct to 12v or unscrewing and rotating TPS.

Would welcome some pointers on where to start looking.

Omega General Help / Rear multiram test - potential how-to?
« on: 02 March 2011, 17:16:01 »
At least I couldn't find it anywhere. Not sure it applies to DBW cars - do they have/need a separate TPS.

I've been suspicious of my rear multiram recently, mainly due to a flat spot mid range that clears big time c4k. Having searched the forum I found various references to giving it loads of revs to make it twitch - well maybe I am a bit timid but I got no joy through that route.

So, I started a process of elimination and quickly proved that the ram moves by hand, moves by direct vacuum and moves when the solenoid is connected direct to 12v, but was struggling to confirm the ecu was sending the right signals.

I started thinking about how does the ecu know that the engine status is 'full load - mid range'. The obvious one (no doubt more factors involved) is TPS value compared to rpm ie if the tps is indicating 'wide open' whilst the rpm is only managing 2k for example, the difference under normal running must be engine load.

Armed with this eureka moment I undid the two screws and slid the tps off the throttle shaft, still connected to the loom. I started the engine and gently rotated the tps's throttle shaft socket with a finger. Sure enough, even at idle, when the tps was 3/4 ish through its movement the rear multiram operated.

So now I've proved the multiram works, I now need to prove it works when it should. Any ideas?

I'm sure I read it on here some time ago.

If so how many? I've got a stored 73, which is I hope because I started her without reconnecting the ICV to the air pipe.

Interestingly,  earlier I started and ran with the rear multiram unplugged but no codes were thrown up. Seems odd as codes are listed.

Omega General Help / Is there an optimum rpm for t/c efficiency?
« on: 20 January 2011, 21:29:05 »
I ask because lately I have been trying really hard around town but still can't get out of the mid to high teens as far as mpg goes, so I'm wondering if keeping below 2k rpm is not letting the torque converter grip enough to be efficient.

Put it another way, would harder acceleration save me money :y

Taking that out of the equation, and bearing in mind that plugs, air filter and timing were all done this time last year (by daz) what are the most likely culprits for poor economy?

Omega General Help / Part no confirmation please
« on: 26 November 2010, 11:22:43 »
Hi

I nearly got an MOT yesterday, let down by a wobbly track rod end. Its the offside outer on a 1999 2.5 gls, chassis no --- X1137328.

I've searched the forum and a lot of part numbers have been thrown up from time to time but I think what I need is  90510654.

Confirmation would be gratefully received.

Next step finding 25 year old ball joint splitter under 20 years of garage crud :'(

Omega General Help / Engine squeak after cold start - not SAI imo
« on: 01 November 2010, 10:54:31 »
Here's a strange one.

Car starts easily and runs quietly at a nice fast idle. As soon as I select D or R, I get this squeak that seems to come from the vicinity of the aux belt tensioner. (Replaced April - 4k miles - not a peep since).

Pop her back into neutral squeak stops. Back into gear, squeak returns.

After about 30 secs from start the squeak disappears until the next cold start.

Alternator came to mind, but why only when in gear?

Any ideas on what, how or why would be most welcome.

Omega General Help / Failure to start - code 31
« on: 13 October 2010, 10:16:31 »
Luckily (?) it's outside the house and I'm not working today so no major panic. Spins quick as you like but no bang.

It did this once before, back in August in Greece of all places, just about to leave for the ferry home. On that occasion, after much Fawltyesque behaviour on my part, it eventually fired up and has since done 2.5k with no sign of a problem. Codes at the time were 13 and 135.

I've been lugging a spare crank sensor around for 18 months so now the kettles boiled I shall be going in to bat. I only came in to check the preferred routing. Let's hope its the right version.

At £50 a side would they be a viable solution to my cloudy projectors?

I went down the T cut/Farecla route this time last year and got a reasonable improvement but it did not last, hence the question.

Omega General Help / Loose pipe connection on a/c
« on: 15 April 2010, 20:59:51 »
Just before it disappears under the scuttle the steel pipe goes into a fitting of some sort. The pipe can twist in that fitting and I wonder if that is right before I go and get the gas filled following my new (new to me) condenser installation.

Omega General Help / Aux Belt tensioner symptoms
« on: 12 April 2010, 19:24:21 »
For a few days I have been thinking that the SAI was making a noise after start up, then stopping as it does. However, just changed my ATF today and started up with the bonnet open, and the noise 'seems' to be coming from the aux tensioner.

As I had my hands full with ATF and it didn't sound imminently terminal I did not immediately investigate further, but as the engine warmed the noise went away.

Is that a normal tensioner symptom, and how quickly do they self destruct once they start to whine as I need to juggle some priorities around.

I will probably slip the belt off in the morning and start from cold to see if that eliminates it, and if so I see there is an option of buying just the pulley so I'll give that a go.

Omega General Help / Checking a cam cover for warp.
« on: 15 April 2010, 10:55:12 »
Yesterday I fitted a replacement (used) cam cover to the 246 bank in an attempt to stem a slight oil leak that was getting onto the manifold and making a right mess and stink.

So far (50 miles) all nice and dry on the outside.

Looking at the old cover and wondering how straight a serviceable cam cover should be, I did a quick check with a steel rule, workbench and feeler gauges. There are measurable gaps along the outer 'mating' surfaces, up to 0.35mm,  with the cover only touching the rule at the ends.

Looking down from above the edge wanders a lot, most noticeably in the area around the filler neck opening.

Are these features acceptable (desireable even) or does it mean the cover is pooped and only suitable for sale on fleabay? ;D

Obviously I now wish I had checked the replacement likewise for comparison, but it came from a reputable source and I did not wish to disrupt my train of thought.

History. GM gaskets fitted and breathers cleaned in January as part of HG replacement by respected oofer. At the time, old gaskets found to be smothered in clear sealant all round. Dont remember if they were GM or not, but previous owners spanner merchant clearly not a reader of oof :y

Probably the same clown that did not flare the end of a brake pipe and fitted oversize exhaust clamps. The list goes on.
