Omega General Help / Re: Cleaning oil strainer - any tips?
« on: 23 October 2011, 20:20:15 »
Ha!

Local vx had no grey. After a word with one of the spanner spinners parts guy said black (as per cam covers) was as good as any.

Job done and driveway still clean so cant be all bad. Strainer 'looked' clean, but a poke behind the shroud revealed a lot of crud. Mostly looked like cam cover sealant :-X

Anyway, job done and the noise is still there. At least that's one cause eliminated. At 165k and a shot body, wondering if it's just a case of running her into the ground whilst keeping an eye on the for sale section.

Omega General Help / Cleaning oil strainer - any tips?
« on: 21 October 2011, 11:20:50 »
Like how long it should take etc.

All this because the top end on 1-3-5 is generally chattery and has been for some time, but lately is getting worse. Sounds worse in the cabin than under the bonnet. Manifold and downpipe gaskets appear sound and no obvious problems around EGR.

Intend to clean the strainer and do some quick oil changes and if things dont improve may have to inspect the lifters themselves. A dose or two of Wynns lifter special has made no difference.

Having searched the forum I'm not sure if i will need a gasket or sealant for the sump, and if sealant is cam cover sealant acceptable?

TIA

I wish you luck!

I've had my eye out for a champagne pfl bonnet for nearly 3 years. Either there weren't many made or I've not been looking at the right time in the right place. Now the rest of the car is catching up with the bonnet, so don't think I'll bother.

You get a different kind of respect when you drive a minger :D

What makes the inbuilt systems better than the handheld ones?

Ive used a TomTom for a few years now and its never stopped working, always got me where i need to go and updates are easy to get, although it does seem  its cheaper sometimes to get the latest complete unit.

I dont have a Navigon but was considering getting one as my tomtom is looking a bit ratty now, all the independant review sites seem to rate them and the map updates are available online, maybe the older units cant be updated?  :question

The Garmin site is just too confusing; how many models do you need?? TomTom seem to bring out a new model every 5 mins as well and the live service fees soon add up!

Ive taken a look at some sat navs for my Blackberry 9700, the Trafficmaster one was rubbish and the Telenav one is ok but likes to send you down tiny country lanes all the time!

Best thing is try a few out and see how they are, some of them do lots of things other than maps! :)
The fact that it doesn't rely/need a decent gps signal (its a secondary reference for built in ones, primary being accelerometers and gyros/digital compass).  This means it works when you need it most - the last mile in built up cities.  Additionally, as it always knows where it is, it already has a fix when you start it - how many times have we all waited for ages for tomtom to get its arse in gear and get a fix.

The real killer blow for my TomTom unit was when it made a right mess through the centre of Birmingham, in those queuing underground bits.  Portable units suck!

You are of course pulling our chains here, aren't you?

Built In ones would do me no good as I cant take it in the truck during the day :y Also, I did have a built in one in a 4motion passat a few years ago. Crap location way out of line of sight.

Cheers for the replies, not very promising then. I might follow TB's suggestion and look at smart phones.

Supposedly the Navigon comes packaged with 2 years free map updates via download - concerning if you say they may not materialise. Be interesting to know what percentage or new or modified roads there are every year.

Wondering if updates are so important -perhaps renew it every 2-3 years as suggested. Come to think of it, I dont own an atlas newer than 2006, and my AA book of the road shows the M25 as 'proposed' :o

My bruv has just bought one from Halfords at a good price as it's last years model.

Seems to do all you might expect, but as it's new to us both we have nothing to compare it too.

Do I follow his lead or look for something better?

Just wondering, as the steering wheel controls do not have any effect and I'm thinking there is no point looking for faults if they are not compatible.

At some time in the last 10 years a different unit has been used, as there is what I belive to be a GM to ISO adapter lead stuffed in the back.

Hi all,

Can anyone please confirm if a bonnet from an n reg diesel saloon is compatible with a t reg petrol estate? Whilst we are on the subject, what about the wings? And bumper?

Seems gold parts are like hens teeth, but there is one on the bay, albeit a long way away. If only mine was silver, I could have a new bonnet every day of the week ::)

Normally happens-or at least thats when I notice it-under light throttle at the point where the autobox lock-up occurs. It only lasts a couple of seconds.

No codes apart from 135 which I have learnt to ignore as it has a mind of its own.

Other issues which may be relevant are:-

1. Hissing from under breather bridge when cold. recently changed the seals and cleaned breathers, but made no difference.
2. Stutters briefly on tickover then settles down, just at the point where the temp approaches mid scale. ICV recently cleaned, made no difference.
3. Never been able to trigger rear multiram by blipping throttle, though can do so by connecting direct to 12v or unscrewing and rotating TPS.

Would welcome some pointers on where to start looking.

Having polished the bejasus out of my old lenses one of my lovely neighbour's did a hit and run and bust two of the brackets on the nearside lamp.

I replaced the pair for £108.50 Depo units supplied next day by vauxcentre in August. One of the ball and socket adjusters had come adrift in transit on both of them, but that was easily popped back in with long fingers and selected adjustment.

You need to swap over your old 1-2-3 range motors and I needed to buy different bulbs (h7?) for the main or dip, cant remember which.

Quick line up against the garage door and mot no probs.

The increase in light is an eye opener. They are the 'golf ball clear glass' style if that makes sense.

Jimbob - thanks for the clarification :y
Daz - they both work mate, just that the rear is not being triggered for some reason.

Just need to get the slow cooker going and I'll be out to test that TPS. Man of many talents me ::)
