All this because the top end on 1-3-5 is generally chattery and has been for some time, but lately is getting worse. Sounds worse in the cabin than under the bonnet. Manifold and downpipe gaskets appear sound and no obvious problems around EGR.

Intend to clean the strainer and do some quick oil changes and if things dont improve may have to inspect the lifters themselves. A dose or two of Wynns lifter special has made no difference.

Having searched the forum I'm not sure if i will need a gasket or sealant for the sump, and if sealant is cam cover sealant acceptable?

Steve, drain the oil, remove 20 E10 torx headed bolts. I usually leave a couple of bolts at one end so the sum pan does not fall straight down when you prise the pan slightly from the sump casting seal. Undo the two bolts again E10 headed which hold the oil level switch to the inside of the sum pan.
There are four bolts again E10 headed tore bolts holding on the stainer one of which is a little difficult to get to under the return pipe.
Clean it and happy days. Like jaime said grey sealant

I get rather puzzled with people who request the part numbers for everything. If you did go into Vauhall and asked, "I need the grey sealer thats used for the oil cooler, and the sump pan please" they would give you the right stuff.

They wouldn't dare sell the wrong stuff to 'The Master'

Local vx had no grey. After a word with one of the spanner spinners parts guy said black (as per cam covers) was as good as any.

Job done and driveway still clean so cant be all bad. Strainer 'looked' clean, but a poke behind the shroud revealed a lot of crud. Mostly looked like cam cover sealant

Anyway, job done and the noise is still there. At least that's one cause eliminated. At 165k and a shot body, wondering if it's just a case of running her into the ground whilst keeping an eye on the for sale section.
