Hello fellow Omega peeps, I bet this one has been asked before. Pulling away from a supermarket carpark on Friday in my 03 2.2 I heard a loud metallic "TING!" and then battery light and no pas. The crankshaft pulley had separated! I got it home and have a s/h replacement to go on - I realise it might not last long - my question is 'in the pulley bolt left hand threaded, and is there a source of new or upgraded pulleys out there?'

Is the pulley held directly to the crank with a single bolt like the Senators/etc? Isn't the outer held on with half a dozen bolts? :-\ Or am I confusing it with AN Other pulley?
It's been a while since I've had my head under the bonnet of an Omega ;D

The pulley is held on by the small bolts. I found when undoing them, that a spanner or socket on the big centre nut to push against, as the small bolts were being undone. Helped loads. The big nut, doesn't need undoing to remove the pulley.

This is just one of the reasons why cordless impact wrenches have become so popular.

Pulley will come off, without undoing the crank bolt in middle. The timing mark is behind the pulley. On the end of the crankshaft where the pulley bolts too. You can see it once pulley is off. I just use a socket on a bar, on the big bolt just to give some leverage, to stop it turning as undoing bolts. But agree that a impact wrench is ideal to undo the main crank bolt. :y

I meant for the specific case here of loosening the circle of bolts holding the aux belt pulley.
The crankbolt itself can be tight enough that you need a serious impact wrench to undo it; Hondas are notorious for this. When I did my 3.0l it took a 20mm bar wedged against the water pump to stop the crank rotating, and a 750mm long breaker bar that was curved to actually loosen the bolt.

My apologise. I thought you meant undoing the main bolt to remove the pulley ;D When I did the timing on the wifes omega. I didn't own one, so used a torx socket on a sliding T bar to undo them and a socket on another bar to stop the pulley trying to move, then once all loose just the torx socket on a ratchet. Now I have a impact wrench, jobs are so much easier. :y Would not use it to tighten the bolts back up. If I remember correct, they are about 20Nm?

I've used the starter motor in the past to release crank shaft bolts .... wedge socket against floor or chassis and flick the starter

The plot thickens chaps. Just had a s/h pulley arrive to get me out of the poo and it's a larger diameter. Am I stuffed or can I get away with it? I'm trying to work out how to upload a pic. ☺

How much larger? I wonder if the difference between the V6 the 4 pot :-\
