General Discussion Area / Poor performance this morning
« on: 14 September 2006, 12:51:45 »
OK, we have identified the cause of the poor performance this morning, and have rectified. Performance should be back to what it was yesterday, possibly still with the slow down for certain ISPs.  MTU currently back to default, we may have to change again at some point over next few days depending on reported speed issues.

The cause was unrelated to the Redhat server that runs the forum.

I would like to sincerely apologise for the problems that todays slow down and outages (it had a reboot, plus apache restarted a few times).

OK, MTU changed on Redhat server overnight. Does it appear faster today (Thurs) and it did before, or is it slower?

General Discussion Area / Ronnie McB does it again!
« on: 05 September 2006, 14:43:34 »
Thinking that the rad switch was the last problem on TB1 (how wrong I was), Ronnie went digging about, found one, and got it to me by 9:30am today.  Once again I have to thank Ronnie for such a prompt service...

Useless piece of junk has blown its load  >:(

Got home from work, and it decided to dump a shit load of coolant  >:(

Looks like its running down the front from behind the crank pulley, so not sure if coming forward from cooler, if if an unrelated issue from water pump  >:(

Tunnie - I've modified your guide, putting in torx bit size, bit about older ones with copper washer, and filter only should be hand tight

General Discussion Area / Project TB1 update
« on: 26 August 2006, 21:15:19 »
Time for an update.

Split coolant pipe replaced and oil cooler changed and reassembled with Tunnie's help. Constant coolant flushes are starting to have an effect, as the coolant is now coming out fairly clear, with just odd oil droplets :)

Rear door central locking motor replaced with one from Ronnie McB, though door card not put back on yet as a previous owner must have had a go, and has knackered a self tapped hole.

Rear multiram repaired, and when activated with a Tech2 moves as expected.

Outstanding problems:
Rad fans don't appear to come on. Shorting out pins 1 and 2 on rad sensor brings on 1 fan, shorting 1 and 3 does bugger all.
Temp gauge has packed up (this was working intermittently when we put it back together, but hasn't worked for days)
Its holding back under heavy acceleration. I know its 'only' a 2.5, but it should go better than it is.  The split hose would have sprayed water all over DIS.

Any ideas with these 3 issues?

General Discussion Area / Am I insured to drive project car?
« on: 24 August 2006, 21:22:08 »
Possibly one for the Police members here...

My insurance says I am allowed to drive any car with owners consent not owned by me.

So if I make Mrs TheBoy the legal owner, am I insured? I guess so, but wondered if that would be the case, as she won't be insured to drive, despite it being hers?

Anyone know for sure?

General Discussion Area / What a bad, bad day
« on: 23 August 2006, 20:07:17 »
Doing the oil cooler on project car. All was going well until getting pipes back on (I'd bent out of way - never do this, its a bastard).  With a bit of advice from Marks_DTM, Tunnie and I managed to get the back one on (after several hours of trying).

You would have thought the front one would be easier. Wrong. The bolt fell in straight away, but on torqueing it up (30Nm - not that we got it anywhere near that tight) that bastard thing sheared  >:(  >:(  >:(

Fortunately, managed to get the bolt back out. We went to nick on off Tunnies project Elite, but hit problems with that so gave u - so Tunnie is going up scrappy tomorrow to strip a v6 to get some cooler bolts.

Added to that, a number of my tools let me down and broke  >:(

And I tripped over my pot of grease, and split it, causing grease to end up everywhere  >:(  >:(  >:(

Then in a fit of temper after a screwdriver fell apart in my hand, I smashed up my leadlamp  :-[  >:(  >:(

And to top it all, i just caught my hand in Tunnies car door - that rather well hurt  >:(   >:(  >:(

Everything I do and touch today turns to shit   >:(  >:(  >:(

I'm gonna have some beer and go to bed before I touch/break anything else.

A special thanks goes out to Tunnie, who came over and gave me a hand (and tolerating a minor temper trantrum), and to Marks_DTM for his invaluable advice.  Top blokes  [smiley=thumbsup.gif], and I owe you both a beer :)
