Time to call it day, shortest ownership of any car in my life time, but a least got to experience as it was then Vauxhalls flagship Elite and to be honest  Ive enjoyed every mile in this 200k+ motor, but alas the cracking drive was no match for the dreaded  tin worm. Having received a call from Serek advising its not worth it. Reluctantly Ive agreed, my heart says one thing but the the head says,Im standing on the edge of a money pit. Problem I have now is do I leave with Serek to get rid, or risk driving her home. MOT expired on the 28th

Get the scrappy to pick it up from Serek's if he's willing to keep it there until you can organise the scrappy going there to take it away.

Book an MOT near to your house and bring it home on that day. Cancel the MOT when you get home. The Police are fully committed to supporting Capita chasing TV licence non-payers so you shouldn’t see any of them on the way home.   

On a serious note, I had some great runs times in my 3.2 and I still miss it at times.

It's not hard, it's impossible. You need to go cold turkey... Buy a £500 shitter and rag it senseless for the winter. Then buy a proper car that takes your fancy. Seeemples

 That would probably the best option for this barge, but how may you ask, a nice bloke has approached me and said he can get me an mot for a fee that apparently will be put on the system. not so sure about that and besides working as commercial heating engineer covering all the HM courts throughout the land keeping all our finest judges and barristers toasty warm in the courts is one thing ending up in front of them is entirely another

If the rest of the car is good, have the welding done. This place is full of people who havent managed to find a car to tick all the boxes the Omega did.
Several have been trying for years, and spent much £££ trying.

I would argue that it's a better car than the Omega, but then it's a car that I have always wanted, whereas my first Omega was originally a Granada replacement for me. The rest became a habit...

Trouble is, as I have said elsewhere, the Omega is almost impossible to replace. Replacing it with something horrendous makes it easier to move on. Besides cheap run arounds can be almost more fun because you don't have to care.

Yeah, I "enjoyed" the Battlebus. Thrashed everywhere, and because it was so slow, it was fun trying to maintain the highest possible speeds through corners and roundabouts.

But, jesus, it used to cripple me for days if I had to do more than about 50 miles in it!

I never really wanted an XJ, but my ideal spec one became available just as I needed another car.  I never really wanted an Omega - I actually wanted a Rover 800*, but as you can imagine, they were all dogs. The Omega definitely won me over. XJ sort of has, but not to the same level.

Not sure there is any car I actually genuinely desire currently**. Obviously if I won the lottery, there are some exotics I'd love to have a play in.


* Criteria then was a cheap, large comfortable transport to drive to the south of France in, with the emphasis on cheap as it was intended to be throwaway afterwards.  And 3-5yr old 800 Sterlings were going for around £1200 with 80k on the clock.

** OK, maybe a very late L322 or early L405 RR, *IF* I could afford a bigger house with space

agree with the above comments. its hard to find a modern replacement for an omega that will be anywhere near as good.
AND as ive said many times. these cars dont rust that badly COMPARED to cars from the 60's or 70's and it would take a lot ' rust wise' to write one off IF  YOU can do the repairs yourself or know a mate who can help you .
obviously if you were to pay a garage or restorer to do the work then things can get expensive these days as trade prices for anything now is ridiculous.

Therein lies my problem.Mechanically I can do most jobs on a car[or with help all such jobs] however when it comes to welding I'm stuck.I learned to gas weld nearly 50 years ago but it's a skill I've not used in many years,I've never learned to Mig weld and I don't know anyone who can although it wouldn't help much as my lock up garage has no electricity so if it comes to welding it's either pay a garage to do it or scrap whatever car it happens to be.

I hate welding and am not very good at it, but I have a Mig welder in the shed, to be used if needs must.
It kept my 190D on the road for a few years, and Ive also found, cut out and replaced a few rusty bits on the Omega.
The worst by far was the spare wheel well. It must have had water sat in it for a long time. I reckon if I hadnt fixed that about five years ago, it would have spread all over the rear of the car by now and finished it off.
Anway - regarding the OP car. I would get quotes for the welding, then have a think about the cost of replacing the Omega and what is actually going to replace it.
Then decide.
