advice please
« on: 20 February 2015, 17:29:38 »

Afternoon all ,

Right ill start by saying this isn't an add, I really do want some help ,
I love my omega but with the wife off work with our new born , I need to lower the costs, plus i really want a phase 1 diesel omega.
Prefer the dash an looks , my fault really should have looked around for a few more weeks ,
So i have put the omega on ebay for what i think its worth . been on a week an not one call or even txt ,
never had this before always sell within a few days .
a couple mates say its because iam too honest but have always put everything on the listing,
so any constructive feed back would be more than appreciated ,
as i only have a month left on insurance an wanted to have my new omega by then ,

Link removed

 :'(
cheers all

an don't hold back .

Link removed to comply with rules...  ...I believe the post was genuine, hence the thread didn't get nuked.

If its getting no interest on ebay, its either wrongly priced, or there are better ones available for the price (which amounts to the same thing).  Although the price you're asking does put it in bargain basement territory.

Any evidence of the timing belt having been done? Would help a buyer gauge if a big/expensive job needs doing or not.

Happy to do Omega servicing etc around Merseyside, cruise activation, airbag lights sorted too...

I would suggest that given the 3.0 is a known entity, you're unlikely to get a 2.5 td for sensible money without having to spend a lot of money to get it straight. Only to then find the the higher price of diesel totally offsets the mpg gain...

My advice... Keep the 3.0 :y

These savings are imaginary, especially if you end up with an auto one... keep the 3.0 :y

no evidence of cam belt , have checked it an still looks in good condition , but yes a worry . as always usually change cam belt an water pump after purchase of most my cars ,
the problem i have is its not the colour interior i wanted an dont really like the dash on the phase 2s .
An as i said before with the wife off, don't really want to waste a small fortune on the car as not 100 % with it,
as is owes me 850
i know i should have waited , but it looked mint when i viewed it an thought i can change all the bits i want too later on
but keep forgetting i have another young'un here so no free funds like before for at least another year
so would be easier/cheaper to just buy one with everything already fiited , only after a 2.2 .dti phase 1 with black half leather .

So it is ::) will still be cheaper to keep than find a nice pre/mid facelift diesel, which will have a BMW straight six lump in it ::)

If you want a 2.2 dti, then you can only buy them as a facelift...

Nope, just a few around, sort of a pre-run of the 2.2DTi in the facelift but I think they found it was a tad underpowered.

To the op - I've owned a 3.0l v6 auto and a 2.5td auto at the same time. Nothing between them in running costs, day to day.  If you must go diesel, it really, really, really has to be a manual. And chipped.

I was getting 24mpg from the 3.0l v6, and 28ish from the TD on my (then) 50mph, 23m commute in. Diesel is more expensive, and has higher servicing costs.

Think you need a session with a Tech2 to check it over - have you had the emissions checked?

Could be the coolant temp sensor, not the one for the dash but the one for the engine management.  If it's reading low, it'll be over-fuelling.

My 3L manual was quite easily be persuaded to give just over 30mpg on my old 15 mile each way trip to work.  On a motorway run cruising at 70 it will hit just under 40mpg, and that's with a 3.9:1 diff instead of the correct 3.7:1 diff for a manual V6.

My M5 won't get anywhere near that even if you're towing it.

so my low mpg isn't normal then , before i had kids , i had a classic impreza wrx uk 2000 that was only running 242 bhp an that did 19 mpg an my other bug eye impreza was running 285 bhp an made 18 mpg , after i sold the pair to make way for a family wagon as my wife wanted to breed i bought a vrs estate running 230 bhp an made 28 mpg ,
so was shocked with the 16 mpg from the 167 bhp slug .
have had it in to a auto electrics garage a mate works at an plugged it in , an other than the air bag light that i know about , all was well

sorry yes its an auto

Are you doing mostly town/city driving?  I have to say that the Omega auto box is horribly inefficient, probably due to the 1980's technology it uses - Carltons and Senators used the exact same box  :o the only update was to add a 4th gear which you won't get anywhere near using in town.  And the torque convertor only locks up when you get over 50mph.

Has the gearbox software even been updated - not that it would make a significant difference to economy anyway, it's more of a driveability improvement.

If you're only doing five miles each way then anything you drive will be horrendously inefficient... This is due to the extra fuel that's pumped in to help warm the engine up... Engine won't get close to warmed up by the time you get to work... Being a 2 ton car, with a lightly powered engine won't help matters any.

Even a clit van will return half the advertised mpg on a five mile trip from cold...

I would suggest lpg to help with costs, but it won't help as it doesn't work without heat, so your commute will always be on petrol...

My 2.5 petrol elite 97 used to average 23 mpg and 23 mph average year on year. A lot of that was short journeys and being left idling.

You have an interesting list of previous cars  ;)

Gearbox software update would not be a recall, would only be done if requested or to try to resolve a fault.  It basically just irons out glitches in the box's behaviour.

I have an ECU here with the latest software, if you check the part number and ident code on yours (it's behind the kick panel with the bonnet release handle) we could see if it's a straight replacement.

MPG-wise on a manual, I usually see mid 20's round the town and also..

My 3L manual was quite easily be persuaded to give just over 30mpg on my old 15 mile each way trip to work.  On a motorway run cruising at 70 it will hit just under 40mpg, and that's with a 3.9:1 diff instead of the correct 3.7:1 diff for a manual V6.

 ;D ;D ;D

Now that made me chuckle :y :y :y

I might add my 2.2 Dti is averaging 38.7mpg now its winter on a commute of 24 miles through lanes and traffic.

It does slightly more in Summer, about 7-8mpg more than my 2.5td, and I used to really try with that one. It doesn't sound much difference but work out the percentage and its quite a bit and I drive this without trying to be economical.

Slow as a very slow thing though!!

When its not juddering its way along the road  mpg is not bad on motorway or around town . Just takes fits when in fourth if there is any  inclines  stick it in sports mode to raise revs  help stop it or  give more gas pedal to encourage k7ck down  in gearbox   pita  .  Think it part oil in sparkplugs from rocker gaskst and old leads n sparks .
Hard to find a manual  v6   i do like the autobox  despite is quirks  is lazy driving
