General Discussion Area / Total closure kit fitted
« on: 17 February 2007, 18:50:55 »
And it works a treat. Deadlock the car, and a second later any open windows or sunroof are closed. It can be cancelled at any time by unlocking again.

I used a kit from www.totalclosure.com - not the cheapest out there but it is a good quality piece of kit with an internal fuse and 2 year guarantee. Took me around 1.5 hours from start to finish, but that was soldering all the connections rather than using the provided Scotchloks (which I hate with a passion, really don't trust them) so it can be done quicker if you're prepared to put up with the Scotchloks. Pretty easy to do, only 3 wires to the alarm module plus a power and ground wire. I ran the power wire to an unused slot in the interior fusebox and put a 5 amp fuse in.

You get some pretty decent instructions with the kit, it's written for a Vectra but all the wire colours match and most of it applies to the Omega too (with the exception of removing the kick panel).

Well worth it IMO, I had this on both my Audi and Subaru and I used it all the time, just getting out the car with the window down and letting it close automatically. Seldom used it on the Omega as I couldn't be bothered standing waiting while holding down the button. Unfortunately my BMW is of the type where you have to hold down the button too (although it does "total open" as well as total close) and I'm not sure if this kit can be adapted.

Looks somewhat 8-) too!

General Discussion Area / Question for the bikers among you
« on: 08 March 2007, 14:06:36 »
It's a simple one: GSX-R 1000 or R1?

I'm planning on buying a proper sports bike for summer, and have always liked the Gixxer thou (at least from the 2001 model onwards, older ones are a bit lardy and ugly). Very nearly bought one last year but the guy messed me around a bit so I just walked. However recently I've been broadening my outlook and have been considering R1s, Fireblades and ZX-10Rs etc. Really like the look of the R1 so that's becoming a close contender to the Gixxer. They're all around 170BHP and 170Kg so nothing in it performance wise.

Any thoughts? Anyone ridden a selection of recent (i.e. within the last 5 years) litre sports bikes? I've been on a 2006 Gixxer thou before and the riding position was quite nice for a supersports, certainly less extreme than the ZX-10R. Haven't yet been on an R1 unfortunately, will need to sort that soon!

Cheers.

General Discussion Area / Bliss... the sound of silence!

Just got a new factory exhaust fitted (all 3 boxes), and wow! It's eerily quiet now, even at full throttle. I can now hear the induction noise when I plant the gas, and I can be confident my multi-ram is working as you can hear the induction note getting deeper and slightly louder when it kicks in.

All I can say is avoid pattern exhausts like the plague :P I'm much happier with the car now, no more trying to avoid using the 1500-2500 RPM range due to the drone!

General Discussion Area / Senator/Beemer 840
« on: 22 January 2007, 11:24:20 »
Quite how a chipped senator will do 170 MPH is beyond me. I have no doubt you could do some engine mods to get the power required, but I've never heard of a chip for a normally aspirated engine that can produce anywhere near the power hike required to get one up to 170 MPH. Vauxhall's figures for the 24V Senator are 204 BHP, top speed of 146 MPH with 0-62 in 8.8 secs (149 MPH and 7.8 secs for the manual version). I don't know what they done to that cop version to get it up to 160+ but it was more than just a chip! You really need a substantial power hike to get an increase in top speed of over 20 MPH, the Lotus Carlton (which probably had similar, possibly slightly better, aerodynamics) had an official top speed of 176 MPH, and that's with 370 BHP!

BTW Having a boot full of gear will have little effect on the top speed as weight doesn't really affect it, just aerodynamic drag. What the weight does affect is how long it takes you to get there.

General Discussion Area / Any photoshop gurus here?
« on: 17 January 2007, 23:21:00 »
I'm considering replacing my MV6 wheels with (ahem) Vectra C GSi ones. Mainly cos mine really need a refurb and these are going quite cheap, I think they'll look quite good on the Omega (certainly they can't look any worse than they do on the turd that is the Vectra C lol).

I was wondering if one of you gurus could mock up some photos of a pre-facelift MV6 with the aforementioned wheels so I can get an idea of how they'd look on the car.

There are some good pics of the wheels in this eBay ad. There are some pics of pre-facelift MV6s in the gallery, such as Pete's project here or MV6 Lee's (which is the same colour as mine) here.

Many thanks :y

General Discussion Area / 540i...
« on: 02 September 2006, 15:15:13 »
This is sure to stir some heated debate :D

I'm toying with the idea of replacing the Omega with a 540i as my new commuting car. Don't get me wrong, the Omega is way cheaper to buy so it's maybe not a fair comparison, but after taking my 840Ci out today it reminded me just how gutless the Omega is. The gearbox is also much better on the 8, it's tighter and you can change it quicker, and the ratios are much better (being 6-speed helps) - the 540i will be the same, they come with much the same box although I think the ratios are slightly higher but it still pulls really well with the torque.

I've owned a 540i before, and it never missed a beat. Similar V8 engine to the 840Ci, which is far superior to the Omega V6 IMO. It's also much quiter on a cruise, I find the tyre noise quite loud in the Omega. It's also surprisingly easy to work on for a V8 for many jobs - you can change the plugs and coils in 20-30 minutes for example... heater valves can be done in 15 minutes, etc....

In my experience the 540i is a much better built car. Mine didn't have a spot of rust, none of the door check straps threatened to break off, the glovebox handle stayed attached, I didn't get misfires under load due to plug leads breaking down (there aren't any!), the idle was always 100% smooth. And that's on a car that was older and had higher mileage than my Omega!

Hmmmmmm... thoughts? ;)

General Discussion Area / Fuel economy.. not bad!
« on: 20 August 2006, 19:02:15 »

That's about 2.5 weeks and 1500 after resetting it. Not bad for a 3.0 barge, especially with my driving style :D

Admittedly it's gone up loads cos I'm doing 90% motorway stuff now (use the 840Ci at weekends, so that's doing 14 MPG just now lol) and it tends to be too busy to get the speed up at the times I'm driving. Before reset it was sitting at 24.6 MPG.
