I was driving to my folks' on Saturday when the car started making a rather unpleasant noise. I was just going through the centre of Glasgow on the M8 so pulled off at the next junction to have a look. Switched off, popped the bonnet to have a look but nothing obvious. Started it up again to the sound of an awful popping noise on every revolution. Still couldn't work out the cause so I called for recovery (first time I'd ever had to do so since I started driving at 17).
The guy arrived some time later, and after some prodding around discovered that one of the spark plugs had come out (middle plug on the passenger side). In doing this it had also wrecked the lead, so no chance of a quick repair by replacing the plug. So the car was trailered to my folks' place and I used my BMW to get back home -- glad I've got two cars then.
So as it stands, hopefully I can just replace the plugs and leads, and it'll be OK. It's possible the thread has been damaged, in which case it'll need rethreaded first, but that's not really a big deal. My main fear is that part of the plug has broken and got into the cylinder, although the mechanic who recovered me said it's likely that the combustion chamber pressure would have blown it outwards. Just need to wait and see.
I'm quite surprised at this happening, the plugs were last changed about 20,000 miles ago so it's unlikely to have been caused by incorrect tightening. Has anyone else ever experienced such a thing? If so do I have anything to fear regarding damage to the engine?
I was planning on replacing the rocker gaskets and fitting new plugs and leads anyway so this will just hasten my need to do so -- probably next weekend if I can get the parts and the weather is good. Here's hoping it runs OK afterwards as I really don't fancy the prospect of having to remove the head.
