Yep, that was flooded as was a large section of the Uxbridge Road.

With all this rain, there is still[/i] a hose pipe ban in the this area!!

Bloody stupid aint it! - After washing my car i used more water washing the soap off with full buckets of water than using a hose!  >:(

I know what you mean.  I use a watering can and reckon that this uses the same amount of water as the hose and is a whole lot more inconvenient.

Makes washing vehicles a real pain.

It has been very wet in London today, and the resultant water logged roads have reminded me of something which I though I would share.  It is just a piece of advice really and I am sure that most, if not all, on here will already know this but just in case..................

If you come across a piece of water logged road, don't drive through at excessive speed.  Not only do you risk aquaplaning but the cold water will hit the hot catylatic converter which will cause thermal shock and could possible cause the internal honeycomb to fail in the future.  Of course, on the V6, there are two converters to worry about.

For these reasons, I always slow down when approaching a waterlogged piece of road.

Hope this helps.

Cheers x25xe, if you ever need a hand i should be around. Not seen your megga about yet...

No you won't have seen mine around much.  That's because I do not park on the road and tend to walk locally.  I do drive to work though which is in Uxbridge.  However, this is in the early morning and I know that you, like me, are not compatible with early mornings!  Besides which, I have two cars, the Megga and the Cavalier.  So one of the other of them is "parked up".

I think that I may have seen your Megga around though.  It was Thursday of last week in Church Road and around 15:45.  Facelift, 2.2 and VERY shiny.  It caught my eye as it went past and I even turned around to get a better look!  Been meaning to ask on here if it was yours.  So was it??

Thanks for the offer of help by the way - and likewise, if you need help and you are in Hayes, let me know.

Cheers guys  :y

Feeling better now after its run... and its all ok.

Going to get stuck right in again, and tackle my dads tomorrow. Usually i am nervous about touching his because he needs it for work. However he needs new pads and sensors (brake pad error on MID) he was going to book into Vx Banbury. But i know how to fix this done it on my first project car and on mine. So looking forward to get stuck in.

Still going to double check everything and take it slow... but still looking forward to it. I went the whole hog with mine, even put plastic seat covers on the drivers seat!  ::)

Propper Job!  ;D

I still think that i am doing a better job than an unknown garge... a mechanic may have not told me of that sheered bolt, at least i know what i have done.

Tunnie,

As others have said, congrats on still getting involved with the car - particularly after such an event.  And yes, you are doing a better job than an unknown garage so stick with it mate - all credit to you for having a go!!

Don't want to sound / appear thick but how can you not use brakes going down a hill in an Auto?  I tried this out and whilst the box changed up a gear, the braking effect did not seem to be enough.  Unless, of course, I just bottled it!

I was always taught brakes are for stopping (took my test 1992).  I guess that on regular roads this is fine - it is just more challenging situations that require a different approach.

Sports mode switch will change down into third.

Additional braking - engage second.

Extreme braking - engage first.

[smiley=embarassed.gif]  OK yes, I was being thick and it is obvious when you think about it. In fact, thinking about it (and feeling even more embarrassed  [smiley=embarassed.gif] [smiley=embarassed.gif] [smiley=embarassed.gif]) I used this myself descending a steep hill in Devon last year.........

So apologies for asking a stupid question!!

General Discussion Area / Re: Blanking EGR valve

I know this has been answered before, but I can't find it. Can someone explain what the benefits of blanking the EGR valve are, apart from to resolve any issues.

EG, is there a power/takeup increase? I remember reading there was - how significant is this??

Also, any change in fuel economy, either way? By how much?

If my EML is coming on with an EGR code stored, will blanking it off cure this?

Cheers :D

The point of the EGR valve is an emissions benefit.  When the engine is being cruised i.e. light throttle openings on a motorway, some exhaust gas in reintroduced into the combustion chamber.  This has the effect of lowering the combustion temperature, which in turn reduces NOX emissions at the tailpipe.  It is not a performance mod as, if anything, it reduces power slightly.

Regarding a change to fuel economy - I don't know I am afraid.

If the EGR is causing the EML light to come on, then blanking it will not turn it off for the simple reason that the light is on because the ECU "knows" that it cannot drive the EGR valve as it is stuck.  The light will stay on, but the symptoms of an open valve (i.e poor idle etc) will be removed as you have blanked the flow of gases to the inlet manifold.

Hope this makes a bit of sense and helps.

« on: 04 January 2007, 17:30:49 »
When I changed my coolant last summer, I ordered a new expansion bottle as there were cracks around the filler neck and I did not want to take any chances.

With a new bottle filled with the correct concentration of Red antifreeze (50/50 mix) it does look rather good in the engine bay!

I thought I had a pic of this, but can't find it.

Recommend fitting a clean bottle though.

Nice one mate!  Noticed this in the V6 DIS thread this morning but did not realise it happened so recently.

Don't know how you manage to keep up!
