It's probably too late to be of any use . . . . but . . . you can get a VW Wiper relay which is programmable (see . . . http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/index.php?topic=89242.msg1143978#msg1143978). It fits in the same socket under the bonnet no problem.

When you want an intermittent wipe you just switch the wiper off using the stalk on the steering and when you want the wipers to wipe you simply switch the intermittent wipe back on.
The relay remembers the delay and will wipe using that interval . . . if that makes sense.     Simples !

I did this to my 2.2 DTi when I first got it a few years ago, and have never had any problems with that.

Hope this helps

Just as a follow on, that relay actually lives in the panel under the dash on mine?  :o
As a further follow on, the old relay tested fine........it was the motor giving up >:(
so it's been put to rest for a while until I can get over there and fit another motor :(

Good thing is the main dealer did give a healthy discount from the quoted price down to £15! :y

I've seen second hand motors on the bay of e for around the £25 mark, would that be about right (that's with free postage)
I'll stick a wanted post up as well.

Aye well that's always an option but not sure when I'm going to UK just now, new job in the offing but it's based over here in Spain and I can envisage being pretty tied up with that to begin with.
Thank you for the offer Mr C. I will bear it in mind..... :y

May have one in Arbroath, chap is checking at the weekend, this was from a facebook post on the Omega appreciation mob.
As the brother in law lives in Arbroath, he has offered to collect and fit!
Hopefully a good result in the end. Cheers for the offer once again Stephen.
