Title: Radiator Drain plug and washer
Post by: grifter on 03 April 2021, 09:44:48
Hi

Anyone got a decent 2nd hand one or new? Mine's is the red one, I've seen black ones, not sure of difference.

Thanks
Andrew

A quick Google came up with THIS (https://www.eurocarparts.com/search/200220050?type=shopping&gclid=CjwKCAjwpKCDBhBPEiwAFgBzjy7VIdd4M1ITakoqlTyWK9FI_5q5aNfVM0lbREDVWNLGg8AEaHccLBoCQhEQAvD_BwE) and others at similar prices.

As said on another thread, I'm sure the genuine GM black plug does not seal properly in a rad that came with a GM red plug, so they are not interchangeable.

Slight difference on prongs and tread.

The prongs are only there to stop it falling out when undone. The black one also has a slightly longer thread, but neither should prevent it from working.

OEM type plugs might not fit pattern radiators and vice versa.

When I replaced mine last year, it didn't come with the washer. My original serrated washer had surface rust, but it's quite substantial so a quick wire brushing and some rust convertor, and it's back in with no signs of further rusting. I reused the old one to ensure correct fitment as I didn't have any new ones similar, and visiting different suppliers just to get an appropriate sized serrated washer would have been relatively time consuming.
