Omega General Help / New long term Mig
« on: 12 November 2019, 17:41:23 »
Hi All,

I posted a short hello in the newbie area a couple of days ago as I've just picked up a 2003 2.6 CDX in Nocturne blue with cream leather. A lovely combo, I think.
I asked a couple of general questions there and got some useful replies, but I realise any specific questions should probably go here, so I've added a bit more.

Over the next few months I am planning to mostly DIY the vehicle into tip-top shape and will shortly be posting a few wanted ads on here for parts I would like. Some are cosmetic, I would like a saloon boot spoiler for example, but other items are service items and certain spares that might be worth squirrelling away while I still can.
If anyone has any suggestions on critical parts to get that might be much more difficult to get in the future, I would be interested to hear opinions.
I think it likely that Omegas will virtually disappear from our roads in very short order and I wonder how difficult it might be to get a coil pack or a crankshaft sensor. I don't want to go crazy and end up with a dismantled car in my garage but how many new parts are going to be available for a car like the Omega in 10 years? I honestly have no idea, but i'm hoping that someone with more experience than me might have been through a similar experience with another model in the past.

I would also like to ask advise on what to check. There is not a lot of apparent rust although the bottom of the rear doors near the end of the sills has got some. I haven't been able to check the front chassis rails, which is one area I want to properly check out.  :-X There are no corrosion advisories on any of the previous MOT's. I changed the cam belt and water pump on my last 2.6 so I am planning to do that next summer. It has done about 20K since it was last changed (checked with the garage) but that was 5 years ago.

One thing is certain, other than my own new car, I haven't seen another omega on the road in Shropshire in over 6 months.

Newbie Welcome Area / Hello again. Back in the MIG fold
« on: 10 November 2019, 18:49:55 »
Hi all,

Been away a while since I sold my last Mig, but I have recently picked up my new one, my third. I thought it might be useful to post a bit of an intro.
Firstly. Omega's are fantastic cars. Most people on here obviously get it, but to the rest of the world it's a bit of a best kept secret.
I've been looking for a while for a good V6 car to keep long term as a bit of a classic. (People usually snort at this point, but I don't much care.) I would have liked an Elite but I haven't seen one that looked good value. I'm not paying collectors car prices, not yet. My two previous cars were a 1997 2.5 CDX and 2002 2.6 CDX with cream leather. Liked both very much, but as our main caravan tow car it was starting to get rather expensive. Caravan towing now delegated, I need another car to do my 8 mile commute to work along Shropshire's mostly empty A roads. Enter Omega number three, a 2003 2.6 CDX in Nocturne blue with cream leather. A lovely combo, I think. Over the next few months I am planning to mostly DIY the vehicle into tip-top shape and will shortly be posting a few wanted ads on here for parts I would like. Some are cosmetic, I would like a saloon boot spoiler for example, but other items are service items and certain spares that might be worth squirrelling while I still can.
If anyone has any suggestions on critical parts to get that might be much more difficult to get in the future, I would be interested to hear opinions. One thing is certain, other than my own new car, I haven't seen another omega on the road in Shropshire in over 6 months.

Omega General Help / Small screw/bolt wanted
« on: 16 April 2012, 17:26:21 »
Hi all,

This is a wanted post (mods pls move)

I have leather seats in my mig and the rear panel on each single seat is attached from the bottom by a couple of small allen bolts. I can't work out what thread/size they are and cannot find a car in a scrappy with seats still present.
Has anyone got a couple of these spare?

Many thanks Graham.

Omega General Help / Variable intermittent wipe on CDX?
« on: 18 March 2012, 13:55:06 »
I have a 2002 CDX with no variable intermittent wipe. Should it be fitted? The wipers are not rain sensetive as far as I can tell.

I do have a wiper stalk with the variable switch, could I simply fit it?

Regards,

Graham.

Around every month or so, my car glides to a halt or more often refuses to hot start. The engine flies over but does not fire. I initially suspected a sensor problem, but the engine light does not come on. Usually, after around 45 mins or so the car starts and I'm on my way.

This recently happened again and I waited for the AA to come and look at it. To my surprise he prayed easy start into the plenum and the car fired (didn;t start) so I am kinda thinking it must be a fuel problem??

The problem often happens on warm days. Could it be fuel vaporization? What can I do to stop it? Any other ideas?

Thanks for looking,

Graham.

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / What is a Bose system?
« on: 04 April 2011, 12:14:43 »
I used to think the Bose systems in Facelift Elites consisted of Bose speakers, loom and amp along with a Bose fettled head unit. usually a 2013/15 with Sat Nav/Sat Nav & Phone
Recently I've seen cars for sale advertised with Bose and from the pics I can see the head unit is the 2006.
Is this correct?
Will someone please clarify what constitutes a Bose System.

Graham.

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / My stereo won't play (fair)
« on: 30 March 2011, 09:47:10 »
After a total loss of volts I am unable to put the code back into my head unit. However much I press the AS button it will not bring up the digits so I can put in the code.
What am I doing wrong? Any ideas?

Omega General Help / Help! Missing vacuum pipe-ID sought
« on: 10 June 2011, 13:21:42 »
Just re-installing the plenum on this extended cambelt job and i've found a vacuum pipe elbow that I don't remember disconnecting and Don't seem to have a pipe for.

The rubber elbow is right at the front of the plenum immediately under the throttle body. In that area I've connected the two coolant hoses and still have the two vac pipes to fit near the bottom of the multi ram system.

I don't have a third pipe.

Any ideas?

Graham.

Omega General Help / Beam me up Scotty, my feet are wet.
« on: 10 June 2011, 17:30:13 »
Well my mare of a Cambelt, waterpump and thermostat job is still not done.
I apologise if everyone else is as sick of it as I am.

The Aux belt fiasco finally resolved itself this morning, when my larger belt arrived and I was delighted to hear the engine start smoothly at the first turn of the key-great.

Turned off and put my new red anti-freeze in and started topping up the water.

Of course my drive is now a fetching shade of pink. Never mind the cost of the antifreeze down then drain, but I must have a problem with the waterpump/thermostat/coolant pipe. It is not the drain valve at the bottom of the rad, the water looks like its coming out at the front of the engine somewhere.

If anyone has any ideas of where to start I would really appreciate the advice.

Regards,

Graham

Omega General Help / V6 Aux belt too small?
« on: 06 June 2011, 17:50:41 »
I've ogt a Aux belt from a motor factors and then direct from Vauxhall, but both are too short. Vauxhall say there is only one for A/C cars but it definately won't fit. I've checked routing and the tensioner seems OK.

Any ideas?

Graham.

Omega General Help / I've had a right cambelt mare!
« on: 01 June 2011, 15:36:45 »
I've finally got around to doing my cambelt, waterpump and thermostat and it's been a right little *ast***.
Strip down went easy enough and the waterpump and thermostat went in OK. Obviously, the thermostat and coolant pipe were a knuckle skinning PITA. The B bolt is well monika'd.
I had prepared by watching the OFF DVD and made a list of the main steps. My new belt was not marked with fitting lines and this was part of my problem. I was not sure how to position the belt and in the end left the tensioner to absorb the small ammount of slack present. Once rotated, the timing marks were around 10mm out (evenly). Then, I realized that only one of the two idlers were eccentric and could be used for adjustment (the top one). This however did not provide anywhere near enough to correct the cam 3/4 errors and didn't effect cams 1/2 at all.

After about 6 goes, I got the belt on in the right place, god knows what I did, but I would like to know how it should be done?
Finally, with just enough energy left to get the car re-assembled I realised the fanbelt was far too tight to go on. At this point (8.30) I threw my tools in the garage and opened the wine.

If anyone can help me with ideas on how this belt should have been fitted I would much appreciate it. All the oof info, the Haynes manual and the cambelt kit info all refer to two idler adjusters!
If I can't work out a sensible method I doubt I will try to do this again?

Thanks for looking!

Omega General Help / Which Alternator for 2.6 Y26SE
« on: 11 April 2011, 22:51:01 »
Is it the 120A version?
Mines a CDX, so not quite as electrified as an Elite, but still pretty thirsty for amps I would have thought.

Omega General Help / Preparing for Cambelt change-Advice needed
« on: 05 April 2011, 14:55:17 »
Just received the OOF cambelt DVD, many thanks to those involved. There is a terriifc ammount of helpful info on there.

I have purchased my GM belt kit, in which the belt has none of the markings referred to in the DVD "crank double line, cams 1,2,3,4 lines and the direction of rotation arrows) There is a short section of numerical codes with a GM logo and the strip codes further round. How do I handle this when refitting?

I noticed from the DVD that once the belt is refitted and the rotations and checking occurs, if necessary the idlers are rotated (RH bank first) to line the marks up. What I couldn't work out was which way I need to turn the idlers to correct any errors. For example, if the notches on the cam sprockets are to the left of the notches in the timing tool then which way would I turn the big spanner.
In addition, I couldn't see whether the idler nuts are loosened before any change and nipped up again afterwards.
It may seem clearer when it's in front of me, but, I have spoken to someone who has done this job himself and who admitted to getting into a bit of a muddle turning the idlers left and right until they were totally out of kilter.

Thanks for looking,

Graham.

Omega General Help / Battery problems?
« on: 28 March 2011, 13:43:40 »
I have a strange problem with my car battery going totally flat. some times it last a few days and starts, at other times after 2 days, not even dash lights!.

Is it simply a buggered battery or could I have a current drain, possibly intermittent, somewhere.
Any ideas?

Regards,

Graham.
