Hi all,
I am referring to the main front and rear bush bolts on the wishbones.

The diameter on the bolts according to my Vernier callipers is 13mm.
I'm not talking about the nut. That is a 21mm socket.
It may be M14 but the bolt used in my case for one of them is a mm or so smaller. I can't imagine that is a good idea.

I had a WIM appointment for Tuesday which I must now cancel. I see little point in spending A max of £135 plus vat (they charge per adjustment with £135 +VAT being the max) if one of the bush bolts is not a good fit.
Back to my original question- perhaps M14 not M13?

Regards,

Graham

Changing out the Wishbones today and pleased to say they came out pretty much as expected. What I didn't expect was that some muppet has put a cut down M12 bolt where I believe an M13 should be. I didn't realise the first side, just thought that was a bit odd, but when I did the other it is clear that although the front and back bush bolts are slightly different lengths, they are both M13. Now as it happens I had a spare bolt of the correct type (thanks to a box of bits and pieces I bought off here) but no nut.
Has anyone got one in usable shape that they could drop in an envelope?

If anyone has, that would be much appreciated.  :y

I can't yet post in the wanted sections so if required, can the mods please move this.

Thanks,

Graham.

Omega General Help / Re: Torque settings for rear suspension Donuts?
« on: 16 September 2020, 21:42:39 »
Yes, that was it- damping block. What the hell is that!
Presumably the donuts, but they don't call them the damping block in the procedure section.

I'll feed back on the results, hopefully tomorrow. The Donuts are shredded, so I am hoping the new ones will improve the dodgy rear end.
The ones I've removed are stamped GM and I suspect will be the originals. I'm hoping there will be a bit of an improvement!

Thanks all

Omega General Help / Torque settings for rear suspension Donuts?
« on: 16 September 2020, 18:43:59 »
Just changing the rear donuts and I am not sure about the Torque figures for the 18mm centre bolt and the 3 off 15mm that secure the triangular plate.
Haynes is rather annoying as it explains the procedure fair enough but the torque settings refer to other named components which I presume must be the ones I need.
Am I right in thinking that the 18mm is 90NM +30Deg+15Deg and the 15mm are something like 64NM

If someone can please confirm that I.m reading the right figures I'd be much obliged.

Graham.

« on: 11 September 2020, 19:28:34 »
My wife and I had arrived in New York on our first ever trip to the US the night before. We had a four day stay booked and had a lot planned, including a trip up the twin towers on the morning of the 11th. It was rather concerning for our families as they all knew of our plans and because of the collapse of the mobile and wired telephone networks we didn't get to speak to them until midnight (in the UK) on the evening of the eleventh. They were relieved, to say the least.
It is very hard to describe the strangeness and horror of those few days. It started so well because of the time difference we had been up since six, showered and had a leisurely breakfast. Shortly after nine we walked out into a beautiful crystalline blue morning. We were staying near the Washington Square Park in South Manhattan and as we walked into the park a police siren sounded and a slightly drugged looking woman (It was still a bit of a Boho area in 2001) coming the other way said it is a bit late for that. We asked what she meant and she said go into the park and you will see.
Well what we saw was the towers in flames and thick black smoke. As the day unfolded it got progressively worse. jets buzzing the city, exits of Manhattan closed. and the most frightening thing of all, a number of jets missing and presumed still coming for New York. The shock of actually seeing the towers fall, not just our shock but that of the Americans was powerful and awful.
Over the next few days the media were mobilised and the newspapers were full of many of the images that we all now think of about that time. I have a picture of myself walking down 5th avenue with not a car in sight.
We spent the Thursday walking from 8th Street up to something like the 110th, walking beyond the end of central park. all along the sky behind us missing a piece. we passed a jeweller up in town and he was standing out side his shop looking towards where the Twin Towers had stood. He was in tears and simply said I have worked here for 25 years, looked at those towers for all of that time. It was quire a harrowing sight.
Although we really enjoy visiting the US and have been six times now we didn't go again until 2009. We camped in a tent in rural Devon in 2002.

We were not sure if we could ever go back to New York again and still haven't.
It has taken some time but just a few weeks ago we said we would like to go back and visit the site and pay our respects. Hopefully, we will.

Graham.

Hello and welcome to OOF.

I honestly don't remember seeing an L reg one, even back in the day.

Might be interesting to look up your Vin number (I don't know where you can do this as I type) to see where in production it was.

Interesting.

Graham.

It is easy to get bogged down in the how, but before we sink I would like to say that I'd be more than happy to contribute.

Surely we can work something out?

A voluntary payment into the OOF account?

I tend to agree that a mandatory subscription might be counterproductive. We need users now.

How about (when permissible) a subscription event.
I also have a beach buggy and the money the Air-cooled fraternity have got out of me is probably shocking. Thankfully, i have had the sense not to add it up.

It wouldn't need to be OTT, I'm not suggesting a black tie dinner, it could be camping in a field if you like, just a meet up, a few glasses and a couple of prizes for best presented, oldest, newest, silliest, whatever.

Perhaps members here with a particular skill-set might (for example) be prepared to host a tech 2 party or something similar. Car checks, maintenance advice etc etc.

This forum is an incredible resource for us owners. As the cars grow increasingly scarce and cars being scrapped really start to dry up (It won't be long) we will need this forum more than ever.

I'm in Shropshire and a silver Omega coming the other way (first one iv'e seen on the road for 8 months) flashed me the other day. Now I'm perfectly used to other beach buggies, beetles and the like flashing me when I'm out, but that is the first time from an Omega driver.
Whoever it was, I think that is exactly where we are now.

Having said all that, I have no real idea what running the OOF costs. Perhaps a poll on "would you contribute" might provide an idea of how much would be required from each.

Might be a starting point.

regards,

Graham.

They've been superb throughout. When you consider how much more mail order stuff most of us have been ordering in the last few months, remarkable really.

Omega General Help / Re: Warning lights flashing with indicators!

I've separated the dials and housing but cannot get to the back of the circuit board as it is held in with a strong metal clip that also captures a ribbon cable.
Can't slide the PCB out as there is a capacitor in the way. Can't see how to get it apart without risking breaking it. Any ideas?

I've cleaned up all the contacts with switch cleaner, still the same.

the only thing I can see is a small hole ( about 2mm) in the ribbon cable (in the recess) that mates with the main instrument connector (a male plug) on the car.

Any ideas how this could be repaired? Could it be soldered? Sounds dodgy on a plastic ribbon cable?

Could the damaged ribbon cable be swapped from another unit/ (I have another unit here which has a different fault)

Regards,

Graham.

Cheers JD

Thanks for confirming what I suspected.
I've ordered the Magnetti ones. If they maintain the boot open, that will be great.

Thanks Doc,

Ordered- I'd not seen them quite as cheap as that.

The spoiler i've added is the standard Elite one, so not a ironing board, ski-slope affair.

Graham.
