Omega General Help / extra power supply - sat nav, phone etc
« on: 10 September 2012, 16:34:20 »
I've just fitted a permanent power supply for my sat nav, to stop having to plug it in to the cigarette lighter.

One tip here was very helpful, don't cut off the plug and simply wire in 12V, as the plug transforms 12V to 5V which the sat nav uses. 12V direct would likely blow it.

What I couldn't find out here was which wires to use (I have wired it to the under steering column fuse box).  It turns out is was very simple - open and lower the fuse cover, undo two crosspoint screws, gently pull down the fuse box itself and you see together one red and one black wire, about middle top of fuse box.  The black is earth, the red is permanent live.  I cut those and rejoined them wiring in a cigarette lighter socket (cheap on ebay) and plugged in the sat nav socket to that.  The socket and plug and spare wiring then fit neatly in the cavity behind and below the fuse box.  I also have an inline fuse in the socket supply. Highly recommended to disconnect battery before doing this but I couldn't be arsed.

The sat nav itself fits neatly under the dash  cover, just below the car information screen.  It still sees satellites through the vinyl coated foam dash cover.

Omega General Help / Re: Timing belt change intervals
« on: 01 September 2012, 00:15:48 »
I recall the original was 60,000 and this was upped to 80,000 in 1998 when a new tensioner with wider range was fitted  (agreed it is now down to 40,000/4 years). Mine snapped at 62,000, I think my car was built just before the new tensioner.  It did give me plenty of warning - loud noise, but the idiot in the Vaux dealer I took it to said it might be the water pump,  and I didn't know any better then.  It finally snapped 2 days later, actually on the way to a decent Vaux garage. My new elite is due this Nov by years or 22,000 by miles.  Given the car only cost me £795 and I now know the sound of a belt going I am likely to wait for the 22,000. Also last time it was done by Vaux they put the fan belt back on the wrong way round, causing that to slip and eventually fail.  Plus I don't think they got the timing spot on.

What's the longest in miles and years anyone has manged?

Omega General Help / Re: uneven tyre wear??

not much good for where you live but I can recommend Feltham Tyres as an alternative to WIM.  http://www.felthamtyre.co.uk/alignment.html .  They were very professional and knew the omega.  Checked tyre pressures before starting which is something I hadn't though of doing.  Competitive prices too.

Omega General Help / Re: Omega's To The Limit :)

forgot some things: a cheap exhaust back box had once rusted inside and partially blocked the exhaust with wool, causing EGR to leak and engine warning light on spasmodically.  Fan belt failed once not long after Vaux put it back on backwards following a cambelt change. Water cooling leak from oil cooler matrix but fixed with radweld. I changed the spark plugs once, a real pain on the 2.5 but fixed a rough idle.  Can't think of anything else.

I scrapped by old V6 2.5 omega last month, had it from new and did 200K.  She knew her time was up and wanted to be put down.  By 200K she had had new front disks (though not convinced she needed them, I don't brake), new mid exhaust, usual rocker cover leakingoil into spark plug holes, heater not working, sun roof not working and leaking, alarm failed, air con failed, rust only where it had been repaired, door catch strap knackered, glove box lock gone, coolant level low warning light falsely on, alleged play in track rods. Final straw was that and o/s handbrake.  I thought handbrake would be simple to do but when I looked up the work involved  I scrapped it instead.  She had been going so long some things had stopped working and then fixed themselves like the central locking.

I have a grill in very good condition if you need it for a modest donation say £10.  Still on the car but will be taking off weekend after next probably.  And I'm 2 miles from you.

cheapest I've found is £38.24.  That was ATS, standard price £44.99 and using a 15% off voucher (which they seem to have removed from their website since last Friday).  Takes an hour (they check for leaks first, I think this is standard nowadays).  I was told if they do find a leak there is no charge.

Omega General Help / detaching a detachable tow bar
« on: 27 July 2012, 16:06:03 »
My elite came with a factory fitted detachable tow bar but no key.  The lock looks a little distressed anyway it may have been disabled.  The owners manual instructions don't help me remove it though.  Has anyone had this issue before, is there a way to detach it or should I try for a replacement key from Vauxhall?  Are there any tricks to removing it even if I had the key - nothing seems to move but I  haven't tried the club hammer yet. Thanks.

Omega General Help / Re: elite anti dazzle mirror and boot
« on: 16 July 2012, 00:02:11 »
thanks for all the replies.  Having to use the key or dashboard is a pain when you are used to just lifting the handle but I'll get used to it. It woudl have been nice if it lifted the boot all the way.

On climate control as I understand it the auto button doesn't seem related the air con.   ac  just comes on if needed unles I press eco which switches it off, or I switch off the entire climate control.  For me the auto button seems to override the 'feet, face or screen buttons', and seems to speed up the fan. I prefer low fan and feet and face setting.  If I want it on the screen I press the demist button.

The mirror is definitely significantly  darker tnan my V6 Reflection standard mirror, and than any other mirror I have seen, maybe it is faulty.  I'll try blocking the light sensor.

Omega General Help / elite anti dazzle mirror and boot
« on: 15 July 2012, 21:35:53 »
I have just upgraded from the 2.5 Reflection to the 2.6 Elite and am struggling with the anti dazzle mirror.  It seems very dark in daylight, so dark I can't really see my face in it.  Is this normal?

The other odd thing I'm finding odd is getting used to the boot.  I keep trying to open it without the remote, is there any way to do this without the remote or dash button?  Also it only pops up an inch or two but I assume that is normal.

Apart from that I am loving the Elite but while I'm at it, the climate control system - does anyone use the 'auto' button?  I can't quite see the point of it.

Thanks

This thread is a little unfair on garages.  The NGK BKR6EQUP is a weird plug and, apart from the colour, look like that when new, it has no central electrode pole. See a brand new one here http://www.ngk.com/productImages/1/NGK3199-2.jpg
