PSA have announced 400 redundancies at Vauxhall Ellesmere port. May well be the beginning of the end of Vauxhall.
Sad really, but it might be time someone put it out of its misery. :(

Not like Le Froggies to shaft the British if they get chance :-X :-X :-X

Don't get me started ! ::) :D

The economics of the motor industry really intrigues me. Seems that when Luton & Ellesmere were doing well the now premium brands were on their knees - JLR, Rolls, Aston, Bentley. Now these marques almost can’t make enough expensive product, Vx is going down the pan and Ford only make engines in this country. Suppose I’m getting old, beer was 24p a pint when I started drinking - bit more than that now ;D.
-
I don’t think Vx or Opel is going down the pan in it’s entirety, it’s just that the astra is not selling too well at the moment because SUVs are flavour of the month (year....years) and Ellesmere Port is the home of the astra. Plus....and it’s a big plus.....the plants over here don’t seem to be able to compete in the productivity stakes.
Personally, I like the astra, it does what it’s supposed to do. And, despite the stupid list price that nobody pays, they can usually be had quite cheaply.
-
I find it hard to believe that British workers ( even scouse ones :P) cant compete with lazy French communists.
More likely that the plant isn't running at full capacity due to lack of demand for the very uninspiring products, so the cost per unit produced rises, due to fixed costs of running the plant.
I think they will either kill off the Vx brand, or just rebadge Peugeots in the UK as Vauxhalls.

I used to work there, building rear axles for the viva. There are as many Taffs as scousers, Ellesmere Port is in Cheshire don’t you know. :P

Not unless a 2 hour lunch break and a bottle and a half of wine mysteriously makes it really easy to assemble an Astra. ::)

Like one of our suppliers at work. We get 75% discount, which brings there stuff down to slightly more expensive than the competition. But mgmt., like the standard stupid British public, are swayed by that 75%, think they are getting a deal ;D

Don't think any are made in France. Thankfully.

It wont be long. ;)

The list price on my astra is/was about £26500, nobody pays anything like that. What surprised me is it’s ex mobility.......I thought mobility cars were lower down the spec. :-\
-
There are some models within the range[any manufacturer]that motability customers can get for no deposit, these are the cheapo paupers versions. However a customer can "up spec" their model of choice but this then requires a down payment by the customer the amount of which will depend on model/spec selected.
-
With massive over capacity and diminishing sales in the European mass market, this was bound to happen. I wouldn't be surprised to find that PSA(which is partly owned by the French government) bought the whole mess just to reduce the competition. And that's only because VAG's spare cash is paying for their emissions opps up.
Makes you wish we had a government with the balls and competence to stand up for our interests long term. Or even short term

Well what a surprise !

Quite, even when it come to EU regulations. French act on the bits they like and just ignore the bits that they don't like, our lot (regardless of political colour) follow every rule to a T.
-
And the French and Germans keep a close eye on us to make sure we do. ;)

As do many other so-called 'members' of the EU. Unfortunately, the British principle of keeping it's word have left us in this current mess, hence Brexit. :y

I have to ask. What have the
Romans French ever done for us ? :)

To paraphrase the mighty Marvin Lee Aday, '... now don't be sad, two outta three ain't bad' :D

Cant beat a nice chunk of strong Cheddar. Everyone else produces wine at least as good as the French now. And why would you want a girlie with hairy armpits who smells of Garlic when you can have a fragrant English rose ? :D

I think that Frenchmen use the armpit hair as handles in the same way that a Welshman uses a sheeps wool! :)
