General Discussion Area / Re: Interviews for jobs in lockdown
« on: 17 June 2021, 08:59:57 »
Long time, need to update this.
Firstly, wife's dad died in November. Cat died in December, wife's mother died in Februrary.
Agency for BAE have got a bit impatient. And I need to give them a start date.
My current client, have continued to prefer me to work from home, due to a small office, but the discussions on my future, put a permie job offer, well in the "yeah, I can see where you got that figure from, but no"
That is the earlier discussions where ballocks.
They continue to pay me, and I'm now getting into thier office about once a fortnight. But I'm a touch bored. And demotivated.
So the other day an ex boss contacted me via LinkedIn.
He is looking for a permie guy to be his operational excellence director. I asked over the phone why he was thinking of me, and he described Someone I barely recognise.
I mean, my mojo, is clearly a bit lost along the way.
Anyway. The long and the short of it, he's the UK MD. His boss in the states wants to interview me on zoom, with a view to me working for the UK MD.
It's at a level that I've never quite attained, but with a boss that always got the very best out of me.
Salary, plus pension, car etc. Would be more after Tax than I've had as a contractor.
Woukd have to spend 4 days near Spagetti Junction, but that's 55 mins drive from.my second home.
Spoke to wife about our aspirations, and she's encouraging me.  For her it's not about the money, but about me feeling like I'm making a difference.
So Tuesday afternoon, I need to prepare.
I also need to tell BAE that I'm not working inside IR35 ever, if only to help them see the error of their ways and help other contractors.

Can't cancel my membership, because you know...life member here.
I didn't pay though. My parents bought me and my wife membership for thier 40th wedding anniversary.  At the time, I was a bit pissed off. I was skint, and the money woukd have been more use.
I can't say I've had my money's worth.

My son works for PWC in the city centre. Part of his work requires him to go to client sites to do auditing.  If hes not he cycles down a canel tow path. He has an immaculate W reg 21.5 year old Astra with only 65k on the clock. Up to now he's been happy to use his own car because the 45p a mile pays for the running costs on his car. It's a bit shite really.

I thought BBQs (and beer and knives) were banned on Formby Beach.
3 Teenagers were stabbed on Sunday.
It's a lovely beach spoiled by visitors.
Apparently the National Trust got rid of the rubbish bins off the beach because the self-abusers were setting fire to them.

General Car Chat / Re: Wh asts it really worth ?
« on: 02 June 2021, 21:57:02 »

..
...  use it regularly (at least in the summer months) otherwise what's the point?

I've been using it as a daily driver since I got it in 2016 with 163k on it. Now 234k  another 300 miles this week.

General Car Chat / Wh asts it really worth ?
« on: 02 June 2021, 19:02:01 »
Someone on another forum asked me whether I wanted to sell my Y REG 3.2 MV6 in petrol Blue.

What's it worth?
 My responce to him was

Okay, this is really hard, because if I did sell it, I'd forever regret it.

It's done 235k

I haven't looked at the advisories since the last MOT.

Service history is not particularly well documented. But it's been serviced with GM oil every 6K since I got it at 163k

But recent battery, stainless Jetex, gearbox oil and gearbox filter replaced about 1k ago.  Recent Uniroyal rainsports. Recent auxiliary belt tensioner and belt. It had 2 new coil packs about 3 years ago.  I did the oil filter mod- it has the oil filter from a 3.0 because the later alloy housing started leaking and it was easier to fit a can.

Probably will need some brake pipes, maybe a wishbone or 2 (they eat them for fun.)

Basically, it stops braking in a straight line, before you realise.  I have a set of PU bushes to go on with the next wishbones.  They weren't cheap to be fair.

It's 3 years and 40k since it had a cam belt. Probably should have another.  There's lots of space at the front and I have the locking tool kit which I'd throw in.

There's an oily fumes smell. Think the rocker gaskets have probably gone. I keep the crank case breathers clear, which is what causes them to fail.

Aircon doesn't.

Interior is okay for its miles. Won't win any awards. But leather and heated front seats. The 4 disc CD changer is stuck and has 4 discs. I use the tape player with an adaptor to my phone and play from that. (Radio works).

It had a new screen about 2 years ago and a new radiator.

A previous owner removed the power sounder, as a precaution, because they burst into flames.

It's capable of very high speeds if you don't value your licence.

Spares which I'd throw in the boot.

Camlock tools

4 x 17 inch alloys

PU bushes

Front discs,

rear hand brake shoes.

Front caliper rebuild kit

Original middle exhaust section

Bosch Crank sensor. (They fail for fun, so it stays in the boot just in case)

How to price it?  £3k gets a low mileage one.
How about £1800 to put to my Monaro find.

https://www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/article-9512583/New-Renault-Dacia-models-speeds-limited-112mph.html

The decision by Volvo - and now Renault - comes as new rules, provisionally agreed by the EU in 2019, could see Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA) systems become mandatory for all vehicles sold in Europe from next year.......

There'll be loads of Dacia owners out there scratching their heads and thinking 'my Dacia didn't  reach 112mph anyway', so it won't need restricting.   ::)

The speed limit is 70, why not set the speed limiting software to 77 (What my wife's Astra shows on the clock when the GPS on the sat nav says 70 mph.

Just install my wife in every car and when you get to an indicated 70, (real GPS figure 65 mph) you can get an auditable warning from.inside the car.
Even when she's not installed, I get the warning in.my head.
Mind you I found out my sat nav records the max speed. Pointed out by my son who borrowed it. My excuse some sort of weird under bridge connectivity issue. Lucky he never mentioned it to his mother.

Tell them you want 3K but they can knock off 0.15k if t
You can keep the salvage as it has some sentimental value to you. Then negotiate from there.
Values on write offs should be related to the most likely retail price. Not a trade in or auction value.

It may be that her insurer decides there's no need for a pay out. If an act of god (very strong winds) means that a perfectly sound wall falls down.
They'll pay to rebuild her wall though.
I might be wrong. You'll  have to prove that she ignored warnings about the state of the wall.  Probably. Start the day cynical. That me.

General Car Chat / Re: Actual cost of producing a car
« on: 04 May 2021, 07:32:25 »
Having worked in the automotive parts world for much of my career, making switches, solenoid, brakes, turbos, for Lucas and Garrett, you'd be amazed at how cheap each of the bits are.

The major costs is sucked in through development and infrastructure and tooling. The one off costs. Having spent the money, they need to recoup it, but it's probably 35% of the cost over the first 2 years. After that, they could probably drop the price, but they need to use the profit on existing vehicles to pay for thier replacement.

If they stopped designing new cars and new technology and just produced the same car for the next 50 years, they could concentrate on just making it cheaper and more reliable.
Think Daewoo nexia...

On the way to my mid week home, last week, I noticed a faint squeaking noise from the engine bay, just before I joined the motor way.
85 miles later, I arrived at my location. And the 3 lights on my 12v power socket was only flashing two leds, and I could hear a flapping noise.
Turned out the auxiliary/alternator belt was falling apart because the tensioner was falling apart.
Took it to my old lodger who runs a garage up the road, and 24 hours later it's back to full health. 99 quid of parts and an hour labour. It meant that I could only go to work one day that week, but working from home so no issue really.

I buy my Levi 501's either from Costco or here:y

I buy my 501s here https://www.jeanscene.co.uk/levi-s-501-denim-jeans-black/
I have 4 pairs. One pair a year. Wear them for work for a couple of years and then they get relegated to home only use and then DiY use.
Just about to buy another pair actually. But I've lost weight so I need to drop a size or 2.

Today in lockdown, I drove 110 miles into another country (Ynys Mon, to have breakfast in my parents Garden, a walk on the beach, lunch in my parents Garden and delivered  my mum her Present for her 83rd Birthday.
Then drove back to Miseryside. Furthest my MV6 has been in one day (or week) since March 2020.
Only frustration is that my wife kept telling me I was going too fast. Because I used the accelerator.

General Discussion Area / Re: Second jab
« on: 17 April 2021, 06:16:13 »
Caught a bit on the news this morning from another Covid "expert" , reading between the lines I reckon we'll be in lockdown again by July. Stay safe Steve.

My wife's sister is an expert in Catostrophising (Is that a word?) And also has an old nursing friend who is quite senior inn a London hospital.
Who told her that they are preparing forv a potential wave of cases in July.
Now personally I think that information should be taken with a pinch of salt.
Preparing for something which potentially may or may not happen is something we all do on a daily basis.
I'm payingbinto a pension, whilst paying out for life insurance. I've got a fire blanket in my kitchen and a fire extinguisher and smoke alarms on every floor. I have a first aid kit. Prepared. It not the same as actually going to happen.

Anyway, I haven't got a date for my second jab. Ecpectingba text in 2 or 3 weeks. I do need to go into the office. My client suggested this yesterday. Maybe one day a fortnight ? I'm sure It will be fine.......
