Thanks James I should add that the thermostat appears ok as the top hose remains cold for a while until a surge of heat comes through And it appears that the water pump is ok also Time will tell.

And thank you Doc I am happy to say that it appears that the water pump is ok and I will keep an eye on the hose.

If I might correct James on one minor point...

From the handbook:

"Coolant level

Hardly any losses occur since the cooling system is sealed and it is thus rarely necessary to top up the coolant.

The coolant level in the expansion tank should be slightly above the KALT/COLD mark when the system is cold. It rises at engine operating temperature and drops again when the engine cools down. If the level falls below this mark, the coolant should be topped up to a little over the mark.

...

When closing tighten the cap as far as it will go"

Hopefully that removes any ambiguity re the level and when to check it ;)

Thanks Doc  I have always tried to keep my level on the split ine between base and top of the tank which is where you say, I replaced my tank cap a few months ago with a new one I wonder how accurate they are as far as pressure is concerned.

Cheers Dr G. I have spent the last 20 years filling it up bang on the cold line. In reality I’m sure it makes no odds, but every day is a school day! :y

Apologies for sticking my nose in....but the talk of top hoses got me thinking about needing a new one at any time, bearing mind I have three cars to increase the chance of needing any sort of hoses for the V6's. And I was wondering whether Silicone would be a feasible alternative to the stupidly expensive second hand rubbish on Fleabay. I have found a company called Merlin Motorsports in Wiltshire who say that they can make to a given pattern, and was wondering whether the V6 engines generate too much heat for Silicone hoses :-\
