I don't know how I managed it but I somehow prised open my wallet & purchased a new battery today for the spare Omega.
I'm now thinking: can I recoup some of the cash by getting something back for the knackered old one? :o
Any thoughts anyone?

Don't believe so. At best, your local tip might not charge you to take them.

When i scrapped my PFL, took nearly new battery off as i wouldn,t have got anymore than a knackered one. Didn,t dare switch it off though. ;D

They used to have scrap value. My old man always used to acquire them from somewhere or other and when he'd accumulated a pile of the things, a scrap man used to come and collect them. ::)
I just take them to the tip. He'd be horrified! :D ;D

I remember I was delivering fuel to a forecourt one day & there was a main dealer attached to it with a busy workshop. I think it was a Honda dealer...anyway a couple of very dodgy looking geezers pulled up ( sorry to any dodgy looking geezers on here, no offence meant :-[) in an off white transit van, low roof, tow bar - you know the type of thing I mean, & they approached the mechanics working away, asking them if they had any old batteries that they could have....
For some reason it has stuck in my head...what would they want them for other than to flog as scrap?

They do have a value we have a scrap man comes once a week and pays between £5 and £7 depending on the size of the battery :y

Some years ago they were worth about a fiver apiece in scrap,don't know if you can still get that these days.Pikeys will have them for the lead and not being overly health and safety conscious they'll not worry over much about the acid in them.

Scrap yards in Colchester might give you a couple of quid for them, but not really worth a journey.
I bought a new battery for sons Punto from Eurocraprats last year and I think they allowed about a fiver "trade in " on the old one.
If you wanted a battery to start your old scrapper and move it around, I have a decent one you could have had for a few cans of beer, but it sounds like its too late now. ::)

..yes I bought it from Euro car parts, they had one of their discount offers going on: paid £48 for it, which I thought was OK & they delivered it this afternoon for free. I had a couple of other servicing items to get so took the plunge.
I have decided to keep the old scrapper now, it's too good to dismantle & we need a car for use in France, to be left close to the airport, so I plan to spend a little money on it, clean it up etc etc & it will get occasional use & lug furniture or what have you around a bit!
Are you still driving the 190 around?

As per b4ndit's post we get £5 for normal batteries and £7 for big 'uns.
I'm told that the scrappy folk get £20 per battery at the scrapyard. No idea if this is true though.

Yep. Do around 8k miles per year in it, and around 4k miles in the Omega. Omegas is nicer to drive, but the 190 is close to free motoring. ;)

Sounds high, last time I weighed some loco batteries in we were getting about £450 a ton

I can see them having a value due to the metals, however I would ask if the cost of disposal of the acid would cost what you’d get for the metals?
