Maintenance Guides / Pressure test coolant system with a compressor
« on: 03 January 2011, 19:44:42 »
Razzo did the original maintenance guide on how to pressure test the cooling system. This is just an alternative way of doing the same thing

Razzo's guide: http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/index.php?topic=90598.0

How to pressure test the cooling system with the Plenum removed.

1)Using a compressor to pressurise the cooling system could cause serious damage if you apply to much pressure so before you do anything else turn the pressure down on the compressor
1.2 bar=17psi That's about the limit of what the system can take.

Apart from the compressor and airline you'll need a few bits.
A quick release coupling (makes de-pressurising the system so much easier)
Jubilee clip (My quick release coupling is slightly smaller than the pipe so the original clip wouldn't hold it.
A bung to put into the other coolant pipe. (I originally used a screwdriver until my neighbour gave me the bung you see in the picture)

Remove the two coolant pipes from the plenum.
On the one that comes from the expansion tank put the quick release fitting in it and tighten the jubilee clip to hold it in place.
Place the bung in the other pipe. I found the original clip was enough to hold this in place but if your using something different as a bung then you may need another jubilee clip.

That's about it. you can now gently connect your airline to the coupling and hey presto one pressurised coolant system.

I was trying to find a water leak on my car and had to strip the intake manifold out. I took the precaution of de-pressurising the system every time I started to strip something else off the car. 1 bar isn't a lot of pressure but it's enough to blow something into your eye and hospitals aren't high on my places to visit list.  :y

How much is a new sensor if you try A and things go wrong?
If it's expensive then B (if the bearing seems ok) or C

You want part nş 90492061 - thats the one with the oval plug  :y
i would just check though with the one you have fitted now. wouldnt want you getting the wrong one. :y

Seconded. Just changed mine (it's a 3.0). The stealers couldn't guarantee it was the right one without seeing the old one. Even with the vin and engine number  :o

Does it get hot when you pull the vacuum pipe off the HBV?

Ok thanks for that ... not looking forwards to it  :-/ :y

To be honest it's not a bad job. When I did mine, one bush came out easy the other one put up a bit of a fight. Like Chris said. Just use whatever means you have to get them out.
Just remember to make sure the car is well supported when you start levering and hammering and you'll be fine. :y

Just a quick update.
The car started after sitting for an hour or so. Drove it most of the way home then it died again. Towed it the last mile or so and it started long enough to get it onto the drive. Seems like It's working until the engine warms up then dies again. Will try to order a new sensor in the morning.
Can anyone explain the message about the auto box. Did it put itself into coast mode when the engine died?

Rich.

Cars just died on me on the way to work. Had a message on the display saying something like "Automatic Gearbox". Rolled to a halt tried to restart and it's not having it. A quick paper clip test revealed codes 12 and 19.
Is it likely to be the crank sensor or is that just a red herring???

Any help would be much appreciated.

Rich.

Have you done the paper clip test to look for any fault codes?

If you take the electrical plug off the expansion bottle and bridge the connections does the message go off then?

Just to try and help a little. heres a picture of my drip.
It's coming from somewhere above that.

Is it a 1998 3.0l?

If so, and its coming from the outside corner of the rear of the passenger block to head....    .....well, you know the rest  :'(

The cars a 2000 3.0l one of the first face lift models.
The problem is I can't see where the leak is coming from. I can see it dripping off the block but it's coming from further up somewhere. every pipe connection I can get to appears dry. What else is there on the near side than can leak?
I'm not ruling out the HG but apart from mayo in the filler neck there doesn't seem to be any other contamination I can see.

Without making this to long here is my story.

A few months ago I had to change the oil cooler after it decided to expire. Since then (or very shortly afterwards) I have had a coolant leak. My first thought was that I hadn't got a good seal on the oil cooler cover or the coolant bridge wasn't sealed correctly. A strip down over the last couple of days revealed nothing obvious from the cover or bridge. I needed the engine running to produce the leak.

Today I have managed to pressure test it (@1.2bar) and although the leak is there under pressure I still can not find the source. All I can see is a drip from the block just below the exhaust manifold on the near side.

So far I have ruled out:
1)Oil Cooler cover
2)Coolant bridge
3)Pipes onto Coolant bridge
4)HBV

Anyone got any ideas where else to look?

Thanks for reading

Rich

Welung, Thanks for the offer. If I get really stuck I might take you up on it.

Chris, I was thinking along the same lines but in my case I was thinking 19mm Ring spanner (Free from work-but don't tell anyone  ;):-X ) modified with an angle grinder.

Well I go to the weekend and only covered 26 miles.
I now have the use of another car so I've been pulling mine to bits.

I'm having a spot of bother with one of the pipes that go from the oil cooler to by the oil filter. The higher one came off OK but the bottom one I can't budge. Anyone know how hard it is to fit a new pipe if I cut the pipe off so I can get a socket on the fitting?
