Seen a couple of episodes ... after faffing about with the friggin' Sky remote ...

East Yorkshire Motor Services has always been a well-run operation, and is one of only two (IIRC) former NBC subsidiaries to remain in the ownership of it's original post-privatisation management buy-out teams - the other being Derby-based Trent Motor Traction Co ... or is it Trent Barton nowadays? ::)

As an aside, EYMS coaches reach Swansea on a daily basis on National Express' marathon 322 service from Scarborough ... and have been doing so since the mid-1980s! :o

And thanks Chris! ;)

Omega General Help / Re: Omega 2.5 TD, warm start problem
« on: 12 August 2014, 01:11:25 »
The geenuine battery should be an 85ah jobbie.
Vx part no is 93197903.

I agree with Seth!

Having had this warm start problem ,changing to a proper td spec battery works well.

I ended up buying the GM branded battery from Vauxhall and it now starts with no issues. I cannot really explain it but it works(or did for me).

I have a [proven, it would seem] theory .. especially since both cars that've been cured are still starting/running impeccably - several years hence :y

Common problem on the TDs >:(

Against all odds, I've successfully cured two by fitting a new TD-specific battery.
(One of the problematic cars had just been fitted with a brand-new injection pump at over £1200) :o

The smoke is probably a build-up of unburnt fuel during prolonged pre-start cranking.

General Discussion Area / Re: End of Motor Travel in sight?
« on: 10 August 2014, 12:49:09 »
All agreed Rog.  Of course the cost of train travel is easily justified versus the cost of a single person using a 3.2 Omega, but when there is a family involved the situation becomes very different. To resolve that issue family rail/bus tickets should be made a lot cheaper to encourage them to leave the car at home.  But then my point about super integrated public transport really comes into focus, with an easier method of suitcase logistics involved. :y

Not necessarily (pro rata) the case Lizzie .. a Family Railcard allows up to 4 adults + 4 children truly massive savings.

Rail travel is the way forwards, as currently being demonstrated in these parts:

Improving the Cardiff & Valleys Rail Network

An Artist's impression of Cardiff Queen Street station

You will soon see work happening at Cardiff Central and Cardiff Queen Street stations, improving the entrances and the addition of new platforms.

This work will also improve reliability and capacity on the Cardiff and Valleys rail network. The £220 million project is jointly funded by Network Rail and the Welsh Government. This will include;

a new platform at Cardiff Central
a new south-side entrance at Cardiff Central with lifts to the new platform
New platforms and entrance at Cardiff Queen Street station
an additional platform at Barry station
improved infrastructure on the Rhymney Valley line at Caerphilly and Tir-Phil
improved infrastructure at Cogan
line-speed improvements on the City Line
a new platform at Pontypridd

The project, scheduled to be completed by 2015, will ‘future proof’ the railway by increasing capacity for potential future passenger services. It will also provide a more robust and flexible infrastructure in order to maintain and improve train reliability and punctuality.

For free email alerts to keep you up to date and to let you know of any service alterations relating to the project, please visit www.arrivatrainswales.co.uk/EngineeringWorksAlerts.

For further information on this project, visit Network Rail's website.

Electrification is also looming for the Valleys network .. :y

General Car Chat / Re: Caravan reversing lights ?
« on: 05 August 2014, 10:05:42 »
This is what I've never understood about caravanners. They gloat to campers about how easy it is to just rock up and put the kettle on, then they insist on @rsing about for hours trying to attach a tent to the side of their caravan. Seems the worst of both worlds to me. ;)

Fifteen minutes flat :y

Exactly Baz ;) ...

... especially if you get Mrs Seth on the case! :y

The 'Mammoth Major' was AEC's 8-legger model:

And here's the 6x4 AEC model:

With the AV505 lump it was a 'Marshal' and when AV760-powered it was a 'Marshall Major'

My father drove an AEC Mandator with the same shape cab. 6 speed crash box, single speed axle. 4 years he drove it for
Keith B

Here we are Keith:

Spiers of Melksham ran a substantial number of AEC Mandators for some years.

225 BHP 12.47 litre AV760 engine driving thro' an indestructable AEC 6-speed constant mesh gearbox. 6th gear being a mechanical overdrive.
Ergomatic tilt cab, which was used on contemporary AEC, Albion and Leyland trucks.

Mandator was the 32 tonner, whilst the AV505-powered Mercury was plated at 16 tons GVW.

Last weekend saw the staging of the 50th Anniversary Welland Steam & Country Rally, so thought that I'd rekindle interest herein ..

One of the 200-strong Historic Commercial Vehicle contingent about to enter the arena:

This splendid Leyland 'Super Comet' tipper has been owned from new by Mr Edwards.

It spent it's entire working life hauling aggregates out of the Mendip quarries, and upon retirement he retained it for attending such events. Being a 1969 model, it's plated for 16 tons GVW; is powered by the Leyland O.400 'Power Plus' engine and is a regular attendee at Welland.
