General Discussion Area / Re: Tool box recommendation
« on: 25 May 2011, 23:02:33 »
Shouldn't you ask his boss what tools he's going to need to start with?

As for insisting on Snap On, some of it's worth the money straight away; ratchets, commonly used spanners and sockets. BUT, they're not the only tools of that quality, and they are seriously expensive.
I certainly wouldn't be buying a SO BOX if money's tight; it would be better spent on the tools to go in it.

I'm a big fan of the Halford's Industrial boxes(the black ones), which are frequently on offer, and to my eye as good as similar sized SO ones for a fraction of the price. I see them in garages and workshops all the time.

I also bought a middle box to go with mine earlier this year(I ran  out of room) which Halfords don't do. It's  Britool, and exactly matches the current Halfords boxes(mine are earlier models), and that's a brand the tool snobs can't easily turn their noses up at!

I've been using a Halfords professional(advanced now) socket and spanner set every day for the last 8 years and can't fault it; only had to replace a small ratchet and sockets because I lost them - something that's easier to accept when the whole set cost £70, not just the ratchet!

I snapped one of their 1/2" breaker bars standing on the end of it trying to undo the truck wheelnuts; when I took it back the bloke looked at it and asked what I'd been trying to undo with it. When I said "wheelnuts" he just smiled and got me a new one!

Cars are getting bigger e.g.:
 ......

Yep! Have you seen a MK1 Golf recently? They look tiny compared with everything else on the road.  :-?

Similar size to a Lupo when I last saw one, maybe a touch bigger.

This is true of a lot manufacturers; their cars have grown so much they need a 'new' small model. Like 1 series BMWs, Lupo/Fox, Ka instead of the Fiesta etc etc. Even something like a Triumph 2000 estate, considered a large car at the time is about the same size as an Astra.

Plus, look at the weights of modern cars; a mk1 Golf was around 800KG, a current one is about 1500!

Buggered if I could afford to run, tax, fuel and maintain a second vehicle, just the Omega costs me enough!! :o

pick the car right, and it's less than 2 tanks of fuel for the Omega.

My Avenger is £103 a year to insure(fully comp, european breakdown cover etc), and free to tax. That just leaves £35 for an MOT. Maintenance is dirt cheap, when the head gasket failed last year(my fault, hadn't noticed the leaky core plug and drove it until it stopped) cost £12 for the set and took about an hour to do -try that on a modern car! Plus it's worth more than it's cost me which is handy!

My drivable 2 are the Omega estate and a 72 Hillman Avenger.
Plus I've a Standard Flying 12 Drophead to build a hot rod out of when I've finished all the other stuff on the go.

Essex isn't a real place, surely  :o

It is, but they're most of the way through concreting it over to make a car park for London. Should be good once it's finished.

Watching the Vulcan nowadays is as interesting as watching somone fly a kite.
If they threw it around a bit more at shows Im sure people would be more inclined to contribute to the ongoing running costs than they are now.

You clearly didn't see at Goodwood  then; down the finish straight at about 200 feet, turn hard left and stand it on it's tail. Made the ground shake about 2 miles away. Seriously impressive display.
But as some one else said, it's time is limited due to fatigue life.
Unlike the Vimy replica which Brooklands grounded due to a complete lack of bottle when it's engines were just nicely run in.

Years ago when all the pubs around my way sold it we called it "squittter and scream" as after several you are looking for the "big white telephone".

As said everybody to their own taste ,but not my choice.

Never had a problem with it, and it's way better than the other local beer; Goachers, which is like drinking yesterday's dish water.

When I worked for a window company, we had one idiot customer who rang to complain that once we'd fitted her windows the cat wouldn't come in, and wanted to know what we were going to about it! Somehow I managed to avoid sarcasm mode, and managed to get one of the installation managers to deal with her. I'm so glad that I don't do a customer service job any more!

Surely given the name, reliability should be number one concern?

Where's the popcorn... TB will be along in a minute ::) ;D

I also find that MG's are extremely thirsty... Friend had one (based on the Rover 45 IIRC) and it was worse on fuel than my Omega... In fact, he's now running a P reg BMW 740 and reckons there's not a lot of difference in the fuel economy :o :o
A good friend has recently aquired one of the 75 V8's and although it drives SO much better than the standard 75, its not actualy that powerful (and does not feel powerful either) and would not keep up with an MV6 through the windy stuff.

The Mustang that the Rover engine comes from is just as disappointing; it looks like somebody accidentally increased the size by 20% without anyone noticing, and drives like it too. The best thing about my boss' GT is the noise it makes as she burbles down the drive

Yes, a '72 1500 auto. Trying to get it ready for paint, and then it will be getting an XE and carlton gearbox to pep it up a bit.

Fixed the coolant leak by replacing the stupid spring clamp on the hose with a proper Jubilee one.
Then when I drove it I found the EML on. My scantool pointed at a 'manifold valve', and opening the bonnet and looking at the multi ram I found that I'd not plugged the connector in!
Did that and the light went out, and it goes really well now, it was effortless before, but now has some real punch.

I'm very pleased with the whole job!

Spent this afternoon changing the cambelt on my estate.

Finding all but one of the mounting bobbins for the multi-rams and SAI were broken was only the start.
Some butcher has pulled the cabletidy out of the belt cover, and broken both; the cambelt cover is now almost in 3 pieces, so I'm going to have get a replacement at some point.

Taking the cover off revealed Tippex marks on all the pulleys, and the tensioner marks were nowhere near each other, so I expected the timing to be out. Using the locking set soon proved it, all four cams were a whole tooth out!

After lunch, I put it all back together, struggling with the marks on the belt, and on the fourth attempt, got it all timed correctly.

Reassembled all the front bits, made some spacers to replace the bobbins, and it started first time. Left it idling while I tidied up and topped it with coolant. It now idles smoothly, unlike before when it hunted by about 250RPM, so that's a success.

After running it around the block, I found that there was a lot of slack in the throttle pedal; fitting the clip that was still stuck to magnetic tray sorted that, but not the water leak from the O/S radiator hose.

It's now dark, and the engine's hot so I'll be taking the Avenger to work tomorrow, and hoping for a quiet day so I can fix it completely.

I'm going for a beer!

You're clearly never at home during the day; some of the crap that's on then is so shocking it makes MM look like the ultimate in intellectual culture. Diagnosis Murder or Murder She Wrote for instance.
Some of it's quite impressive though; Deal or No Deal has convinced the braindead that opening 20 boxes in a row is a game of strategy, or that proving that you're a brainless, talentless, moral vaccuum on Jeremy Kyle is something to aspire to!

Sorry, rant off now.

Renewed mine last year, used the Post Office check, and they sent it off.

Got the cancelled one back two days later, and the new one the following day.

Much as I'd like to complain about a government department, I can't in this case!

She doesn't drive my Omega far enough to get the chance to scuff bumpers ............... fortunately  ::) ::) ::) ::).
But it would seem that she's driven mine!
Small scuffs on all 4 corners.
