Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Re: usb music
« on: 16 October 2017, 19:31:08 »
i did get one of these earlier this year  http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/382189158857
£1.75 (actually i got the £3.60 model which shows the track name).  It works ok i don't use it because the tape player is better and less obtrusive.

Hi mgmog. Never seen one of those but i dont have the facility to record on an sd card .but the ideas good and seeing as it comes from china that would explain the price!.my idea was to be able to play a memory stick in my cars which dont have a cd player or any modern unit and the plug in cig lighter unit SEEMED like a possible option but no one i know has one to try or had one. The china ones are cheap on ebay but dont always arrive and the maplins versions look the same at ten times the price.cd player in my omega still ok for cd's .can mod to an aux in if req for other media like ipod etc. Just running a few thought around my head ? Cheers

If you can record to a USB memory stick then you can record to an sd card.  You may need a USB card reader they are 99p or so even from the UK http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/222556696575 . that will allow you to plug an sd card into a usb slot on your computer and copy songs to it as if it was a usb memory stick.

if you want to play from an sd card I have one of these

£9.99
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/152632215916 (or these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/253107106372) it works very well.  sound is obviously not as good as cd but much better than tape, better or as good as radio and far better than those cheapo cassette adaptors with a lead.

Omega General Help / Re: Hole in cill pre MOT
« on: 05 October 2017, 18:56:35 »
not easy to tell from the pic but it doesn't look too bad.  the main concern is the split along the seam, you will need to weld a plate over it.   the blister (probably hole)  looks minor, you could just clean up and fill with an epoxy filler.

so i would mechanically and chemically remove the rust to get a feel for what is solid and most of all to get a clean rust free surface to weld to.  fertan chemical is probably the easiest to use as it is water based and doesn't dry, or an acid like Hydrochloric Acid (Muriatic Acid) while it is still legal.

i have an inverter mig welder but for that small section i would get out my stick/tig/plasma machine as it is less hassle to set up. you don't need a continuous neat weld, as a rough guide 1 inch of good weld holds a tonne.  then grind it neat and treat the inside liberally with penetrating rust treatment and the outside with an anti rust primer, either water based like vactan or preferably solvent based like fortress,  then underseal.

Hi,
Thanks for all the advice.
I got new lights for the B series here:
https://www.buycarparts.co.uk/opel/omega-b-25-26-27/13647/10533/headlight-insert
The site says .co.uk
But they're coming from Germany.
Let's see if they point the right way!

Mike

just type "speed test" into google.  They use M-Labs, very quick, no ads or fancy stuff.

The problem I have found is that once you have used the 3M / sandpaper kits is that the headlight will yellow again extremely quickly as there is no UV protection at all.

Apparently clear coating them, applying some UV barrier polish or some form of protective film are supposed short term answers.

this stuff might work http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/382100459169
Have you tried it?

I have used this stuff a lot but never on a headlight so as they say test on an inconspicuous area first.  can't see why it wouldn't work, it is solvent free  and is epoxy so sets solid, adheres well and will be reasonably heat resistant.  it sets clear and is uv resistant suitable for exterior use.  I have used it on toughened glass outdoors and it has held up for 2 years so far.  normally it is used to coat surfboards etc..  they do a faster setting one which may be better to avoid dust getting entrapped.

wire brush loose rust, remove any grease with meths, wash with sugar soap and rinse to remove all salts, when dry apply a penetrating water based rust converter like Vactan to rust, when fully dry apply underseal eg hammerite underbody seal with added waxoyl :y

put 'square' in the search if you want to narrow it down from 5,600 results to 7.
