caught speeding
« on: 30 January 2023, 22:23:43 »

just had to pay a £100 speeding fine & got 3points on my license, not bothered about the money but the points are the first ever, driving since 1964 so got away with lots but still more narked about the points.  stupid sat nav was displaying a 40mph zone & i was clocked at 38 in a 30mph zone.

Unless you get nicked again of course!  ;D

Ah well, join the club
I've been done a few times. Did one "awareness course" which wasn't as bad as I was expecting and I did learn stuff.
My biggest p***off was 34 in a 30 by a mobile camera
My most deserved was 107 on the M4 on my way to see my dying dad. No ban, but 6 points and a fine.

Speed or don't speed, but don't blame the satnav for not paying attention to the road markings and signage.

No sympathy here. But you've learnt two things:

Your satnav cannot/should not be relied upon.

£100 and three points is pretty light for a 'stupid tax'.

38 in a 30 speed limit would surely qualify for a speed awareness course, especially being your first speeding offence? You are narked about getting points, so I'm surprised you didn't take up the offer of one, or were you not offered one...?

Exactly as I was caught a few years ago. Zone limits seem to change a lot these days, and the new car I have just bought has an optional package which reads the speed signs, whereas the base model relies on satnav info, and since that probably doesn’t get updated often, if at all, it becomes a nice money earner.

In Spain you get speeding and other driving offences but the authority isn’t obliged to contact you eg letter in the post.  I did have one for turning into a bus lane too early to access underground parking. That was 100 euros with 50% duscount early payment. Went straight to the bank handling that business and the teller scanned it and said 100 mate. What about the discount ? Nothing shown. Robbing barsteward was going to pocket the 50. So instead we drove to the “ DVLA” and had a grand day out with the 50 euros saved….

They do however post it on a website ( access to which is quite difficult - you have to get a digital certificate, plus it is down a corridor marked beware of the tiger). You can build up a lot and the first you know is if you are randomly stopped and they check. Over time the penalties increase due to non payment…………..

Didn't say I was and nor do I claim to be. I've had my fair share of points, and even been to court for some of them.

But don't admit to not paying attention to what is going on around you then start bleating about the consequences.

Blaming the satnav is akin to blaming the dog because you couldn't be bothered to do your homework.

Yes I know that ::)....it's the basic info re eligibility for a  speed awareness course. Ray mentioned that he was peeved about the points....
Maybe there was some of the criteria that wasn't met that resulted in a course not being offered and the 3 points and the fine. But a basic speeding offence at that quoted speed with no other offences on a first offence and providing the offender accepts the offer, then a speed awareness course ought to be offered. Force policy does vary from region to region but they are all pretty standard at 38mph. Most forces allow infringements of 10% plus 2 mph, which I understand was from the days when speedos weren't accurate as today to allow a percentage for speedo inaccuracy.

I put the link up to indicate the various general criteria. The 10% margin was a gesture of leniency that has quietly been dropped over recent years.

I've had points for 36/30 from a camera van and a couple of courses for 45-6/40 from gatsos. But each force pretty much does what they want (in line with the above guidance) with some now trying to use unmarked camera vans and baiting drivers with unmarked cars.

Most speedos over read by 10% now, that is why you get stuck behind the 36mph in a 40 (or 60) numptys. I always check my speedo against the sat nav and the nice signs that show how fast you are going (so far tally up).

Google maps don't show your speed anymore, which is a shame as that was quite handy for long stretches where there are average speed cameras.  :-\

Going past Newport on the M4 for example which is a 50mph zone.  ::)

That's what cruise control is there for ;) the car already tells you how fast you're going. The signs tell you how fast they want you to go.

Posted limit plus 10% on the speedo is usually enough to keep out of trouble and make progress.

I've always set my cruise control from Google maps then you make better progress and also keep pace with the trucks travelling on their calibrated speedos.  :)

No speed limits on the motorway before Barbara Castle slapped a 70 MPH limit on the late sixties. The ginger bint couldn't even drive. ::)

Before this 150 MPH on the M1 was perfectly legal in your E-Type. :y

Yes I think it was the E type that brought in the speed limits. That  beautiful mk1 3.8 triple SU, icon can never be denounced though for me👍 really wish I could have afforded one back then but to be fair I doubt if would be here now if I could😱

I'd heard that it was the speed of the AC Cobra that caused all the outrage back then.Of course the 70mph limit was only introduced as a temporary measure so expect it to be lifted any time soon :D

I used Google maps last night & can conform that your speed is also shown alongside the limit .... and it goes red if you're over the limit - apparently!

I prefer cruise control if I can see far enough ahead that it’s worthwhile but use the limiter if I’m having to constantly manoeuvre around parked vehicles, so it completely depends on the circumstances. Others will have their own preferences.  :)  So far, I’ve mowed down twelve pedestrians while on cruise control in a built up area but haven’t been done for speeding lately, so every cloud and all that.  ;D  Only kidding

Google maps don't show your speed anymore, which is a shame as that was quite handy for long stretches where there are average speed cameras.  :-\

Going past Newport on the M4 for example which is a 50mph zone.  ::)
I used google maps yesterday and pretty sure the speed limit was still displayed. Of course, I can't be 100%, so I'll check next time I use it.

I used Google maps last night & can conform that your speed is also shown alongside the limit .... and it goes red if you're over the limit - apparently!

Thanks Andy, I'll check my settings.  :y

Might give Waze a go as well next time I do a long trip.  :)

Is it daring do or derring-do?
The expression logically should be “feats of daring-do” because that's just what it means: deeds of extreme daring. But through a chain of misunderstandings explained in the Oxford English Dictionary, the standard form evolved with the unusual spelling “derring-do,” and “daring-do” is an error.  :P

38 in a 30 speed limit would surely qualify for a speed awareness course, especially being your first speeding offence? You are narked about getting points, so I'm surprised you didn't take up the offer of one, or were you not offered one...?
https://www.askthe.police.uk/faq/?id=f4dfaac6-4575-ec11-8943-0022480702b6

Pity you never included this information in your first post.
So.....you can't do a speed awareness course because you've done one within the last three years. And the reason you haven't got any points is not because you haven't transgressed before, but because you've already used your get out of jail card.
Sheesh.....whatever happened to the English language.

I have to admit having done an online speed awareness course recently (59mph on the M62 in a 50). Got zapped by a fixed camera, but in the preceeding stretch the variable speed limit had changed between 50, 40, then 60 , so in a moment of inattentativeness (is that a word?)......not an excuse I know, but there we go....
I did learn that if you attend a course for a particular speed offence (such as for a 50mph offence), and within the 3 years get nobbled by a camera for another speeding offence but in a different speed category (such as a 60mph), then you are eligible to attend another course. If you did two in a 50mph, then no, but if one was 40 and the other in say a 60, then you are eligible for a second course, even within the 3 years.
That came out on the course, so I presume it is correct, although I won't be risking it just in case it's not.....

Shame you don't have to go to the classroom anymore as I quite enjoyed my Speed Awareness Course.

There was an amusing know it all dickhead who kept chuntering away about the injustice of it all, some interesting characters to chat to over coffee, and an attractive blonde with nice tits to distract me.  :)

Although I could have done without it of course, it was a nice day out!  ;D

On my course, it was all old bints, or thick bimbos I wouldn't even go near with yours.

I have no good things to say about mine, other than it saved 3 points, which would have been harsh for such a tiny transgression of the rules....

Not in the same speed league, but very early 70s I had an old Austin Westminster. 3 Litre, straight 6. Tank of a thing (think B&W TV detective programmes).
First time I drove over 100mph M1. No reason for the journey, just a "drive". 110MPH. I remember it well. A bit terrifying.

Managed to squeeze a ton out of my Ford zodiac mk3 at the third attempt 🤣🤣 2.6 straight six
.

They were a beautiful looking car , the Zodiac being the best of the range , nice fintails & lots of chrome.👍

Many many moons ago, early 80's, I saw a MKIII Zephyr/Zodiac in Southampton with a 'for sale' sign in the window for £150 ..... I always wish I bought it  :-\
