Title: Heat reflective screen vs satnav... Calling Elite owners...
Post by: 05omegav6 on 18 October 2015, 16:59:44
As above...

Referring to TomToms etc rather than factory units.

Voted appropriately but I am aware that it often does, I just haven't experienced it :y

Voted with the silly answer deliberately as my TomTom is tempremental at the best of times and I don't use it for anything other than commuting at the moment, so any other answer would be inappropriate.

Heat reflective screens came up in conversation earlier and I recall mention of it being a potential issue, hence the poll... Hopefully put the myth to bed one way or tother :y

It affects some satnavs mate. The older Renault clits had a square near bottom middle on heat reflective screens for satnav to sit in. But I have never had any probs :y

Never noticed the issue myself, on two different Omega's with original heat reflective screens.
I did once have a 'W' plate armoured transit, foolishly I plugged the TomTom in expecting something to happen, but clearly I could never get signal  ::)

Never had a problem in the Elite with road angel gps but the same item would not work in my daughters old Peugeot 206 with heat reflective screen without the aid of the additional dash aerial. Even then, you had to sit the aerial in the bottom outer corner of the screen.

yes
that s why some have a external socket mine wouldn't work at all in French car with a heated screen

I suspect the deciding factor is actually the windscreen brand :-\

Thinking about it, where my phone (and sat nag in the past) sits is roughly under the black bit around the rear view mirror which isn't reflective anyway.

Al, Enlighten us, or me at least, how you identify the heat reflective screen. Different colour, framed? I am not sure if I have one or do you know I have?
Thanks.  :y

I had a Becker stand alone that was used in a MV6 Estate moons ago with a HRS, from switch on it wouldn't pick up jack shite signal but if moved briefly to the side window it kick into life within seconds, would have to do this every time to get it to work, strange thing was, once it got its signal you could move back to the centre of the screen without issues until the next switch on.  :-\

Thanks Al. I shall have to have a good look in the light. I don't think the screen in my car is the original though.

Al I don't think my car has your tints green or purple. Front and sides seem to be the same. Front just has a sun strip.  So it looks like mine does not have the heat reflective option after all.  8)

Not voted as normal windscreen in my Omegas, but I know in the Zaffy, the satnav struggles (receiver in front quarterlight, near tax disk), my gayPhone 6s reports accuracy as 10m (rather than its usual 5m) and my old iPAQ setup takes ages to get a 3D location if Bluetooth receiver is on dash (but fine if on rear parcel shelf).

I can also say that in a Shitroen C5, iPhone is poor, and iPAQ needs receiver at the back of the car.
