lane change indicators
« on: 29 April 2012, 00:21:10 »

Driving a merc sprinter a lot atm, and really miss the 3-flash lane-change on the indicators when i get back in t'mig

Anyone tried a mod? failed? won? know 'owt about it?

Would assume that as even the basic festa has it now, that the insignia does at least, wondered if it's a whole programming/ecu thing?

I can't think of many situations where they'd be useful, TBH - 3 flashes is short enough to be missed by the majority of Magoos out there...

I've always thought them a bit of a gimmick but have to confess to missing them as well now I'm back in the Omega. I wonder if it's as simple as fitting a different flasher unit :-\

Isn't it a gentle push on the stalk for 3-flash, a proper click for latching them on? Probably need stalk and/ or connector.

The stalk function allows holding , before a further push clicks them on until clicked off.

So i guess its a programming thing.

Although how much longer do we have to hold an arm out for three flashes, really?

Reason I think there are a good idea - how many times have you been in the outside lane, at speed, where the middle lane driver pulls out with just a single flash.

Not aproblem on std BMWs of course...

The Ibizia has this. I also looked at fitting it to my Omega. However the relay is part of the instrument cluster so there's no relay as such.

if they pull out regauardless, what differance does the number of flashes make?
They would be nice to have though, although 4 flashes minimum IMO if they are to be usefull.

Question is how?

My driving instructor, many, many years ago .. but NOT in the days of semaphore arms before you lot start .... taught me that the minimum number of flashes is 4 but you should aim to do the same number of flashes as your speed in tens .. so on a motorway at 70 .. it is 7 flashes.

They are INDICATORS of INTENT, and therefore should be on long enough for the observer to register that intent and take any corresponding action required.

They are NOT, "I'm moving now" devices.

Very true. There are too many drivers out there that consider indicating is a "right of way"  Then there is another army who will indicate AS they are manoeuvring, and also consider it to be the right thing to do. "Mirror, signal, manoeuver" NOT "Mirror, manoeuvre, signal". These actions require thought and consideration, and should not be replaced by gadgets

I do believe this to be a technical question gents, although the irony of BMW designing indicators that apparently fail to cancel is not lost on me. :)
