Omega General Help / Re: headlight level sensor
« on: 09 February 2018, 22:02:23 »
when they bring up the field vision error message is it because it has detected the sensor has gone open circuit ? .and can they fail in other ways too.like no error messages but no signs of lights moving ? .

Omega General Help / Re: Rear suspension problems
« on: 08 February 2018, 12:15:50 »
hi. just because its sitting lower at the back doesnt necesarily mean the problem is at the back. unless the car is twisted which i dont imagine it will be then if you have one side higher at the back this could mean the front opposite corner is low.you realy need to confirm ride heights to see if its the back or front.they can all be slightly different.mine is a 2003 cdx and as a basic look out of my window at it you can see a good couple of inches between the top of the front tyre and arch and possibly 3” on the back wheel but as i say they will all be slightly different due to age, different specs, different makes of spring etc.
so.starting at the back first i assume this problem was also there with the old springs and new ones are the same even if you swap them side to side ?.
as been mentioned the springs both have their rubbers and no signs of any rusting or other damage to the seats ?.
no obvious faults / equal gaps etc between side crossmember mounts (donuts!) and the rear diff mounts.
no obvious damage /bends or otherwise to rear arms .
no different tyre sizes fitted !
then moving on to the front.have you done any work to springs, strut top mounts etc and with suspension hanging free can you confirm the springs are not broken,no evidence of broken ends even thou the broken bit may have fallen out.(they dont usually!)

General Car Chat / Re: aluminium parts and steel bolts.
« on: 27 January 2018, 17:54:57 »
It depends how bad it is corroded in. At work we deal with many aluminium casings and endplates on industrial fans and motors and lots of times we have to apply heat to release them. Most times  heating the actual bolt works, sometimes flicking the heat around the bolt shaft to heat the aliminium to almost melting point does it. Then the bolt should release.
With sheared off heads that you cannot put a saw slot into we usually have success by welding a nut over the remains and then trying immediately or further heating if required.
Sometimes plenty of release oil wd40 etc and carefull movement backwards snd forwards can work straight from cold if you are lucky.
Then for extreme cases we have to drill out ,starting small and central and increasing to size.

Omega General Help / Re: Hedgehog!
« on: 27 January 2018, 17:45:54 »
The hedgehog can survive sometimes. My brother said his heater blower had stopped working on all speeds. So we started to look at it by measuring the voltage going into the motor.nothing but noticed there was water evidence around it. That was when we discovered the dreaded scuttle drain problem. We cleared the scuttle drain.removed carpets, insulation etc and dried car out.a week later i started to investigate the blower motor and found it was all working fine and has continued to do so for the last 8 years.no issues since and scuttle drain regularly checked.

General Car Chat / Re: New MOT Test
« on: 24 January 2018, 19:18:07 »
Personally, I am more worried about cars over 40 years old being excempt from an MOT.

Can't agree with that most cars over 40 years old or older would be owned by enthusiasts probably owner club members & take pride in their chosen classic, I have a friend who owns a 1973  MG Midget & a 1975 MGB GT V8 cover very few miles annually but are still serviced & tested every year. My concern would be more with the local hooligan in the 3 series BMW who cannot really afford to maintain it properly & who drives with no regard to other motorists.

I know of quite a few who are incapable of maintaining their classic and rarely have work done on them unless it fails an MOT.....these very much worry me  :y

Exactly my point. Yes most people who drive classics know their cars inside and out and will maintain to a very high standard. Myself included. BUT as said above there are most likely people who drive their cars without a care in the world and know nothing about them until mot time, its been known for people to drive cars with known faults minor or major and do nothing sbout them until mot runs out when they then decide if it will fail on more things and become too expensive to fix.the point is.the new mot rules could maybee take a few more unroadworthy cars off the road but if no mot is needed on older cars they could be driven in a dangerous state as they may never get inspected .im all for tightening up mot rules but cannot see any benefit to anyone to make some cars exempt

exactly. also on a similar theme its absolutely unbeleivable when you are at at tyre place and see old tyres in the scrap pile that are totally totally u/s. they were up until recently on someones car driving around. this means to me that there are many people driving around who never check important issues like this, let alone basic fluid levels.

Omega General Help / Re: Smell of hot oil when engine is warming up
« on: 22 January 2018, 11:13:36 »
thats true cos its a sod to dry out when it does especially this time of year.
also re the breathers. mine is only a basic test to meke sure they are not totally blocked. i doubt you would hear air escaping from the cam covers anyway but on an unblocked breather you should hear yourself blowing through into the plenum plastic top section.on a blocked up breather you would not be able to do this and would end up creating a pressure inside the. crankcase as you blow.
sorry if i misunderstood what you just replied. you have many years more experience on omegas than myself so not trying to tell you how to do stuff.

...

As the law stands now, my understanding is; if you go in before the expiry date & the car fails the MOT, you`ll be driving without a valid MOT......

No it doesn't  ...... that's the whole point in being able to take your car for MOT a month before. If a car is dangerous, its dangerous both with or without a MOT

This is probably what he means . If the car fails the mot even thou the last one hasnt run out you have a car thats not in a roadworthy condition and cannot be used on the road .obviously this is from one extreme to the other ,bulb out or split wiper blade to one brake corner not functioning or a split/ cracked suspension arm etc.some faults would allow the car to be driven to a place of repair other faults wouldnt

Nothing to worry about there surely. Correctly maintained cars will be ok and neglected or dangerous cars will fail. Exactly as it should be. Its wether the testers will test cars correctly or not that worries me. Im sure anyone who has bought a new aquisition even with a long or recent mot has found many a thing wrong that should have been pulled up at the test but domehow didnt.things such as very rusty brake pipes that didnt just get to that stage in a few weeks or months or metal fuel pipes etc.the stupid thing to me is that they are now abolishing mots for cars over 40 years old. Whilst most will be run by enthuisiasts who know their cars inside out there will be some that dont and end up on the road with dangerous faults.

Probably true, DG, but I didn't know there was a bung to look after until advised on here - another reason to love being here.  :-* :-* :-*

Ron.
.  this is so true and i bet many an omega owner ,myself included only found out about the blocked flap once they discovered a gallon of water in the passenger footwell. a bug*** to dry out so now i check the drain regularly . all cars have these ,dare i say “design faults/issues” which only come to light as the cars get older. still worth it thou!

i would imagine as others have said earlier that the drain grommet is in effect a one way valve with a flap to allow water out and hopefully no fumes back in. it was originally designed and fitted by gm and if it didnt need it they would have saved on production costs .theoretically there shouldnt be any fumes coming from the engine but as we all know these engines have a history of various oil leakage areas and after sorting them there are some hard to reach areas to clean off. so personally i would refit the cable grommet and clean up the drain grommet and refit .the valve realy needs checking regularly for blocking and cleaning. incidently when checking for oil leakage /smells on the passenger side its noted that the oil filler cap extention tube can leak on its bottom o ring and also from the cap especially if the o rings have hardened over time.
also a tip on a BASIC  check of the breathers to check they are at least partly open and not totally blocked is to get a piece of hose that will just fit onto the dipstick tube end and blow into it.if they are totally blocked pressure will build up and be very obvious but if there is a way through you will hear yourself blowing into the plastic ecotec bridge.a quick basic test if you are about to set off on a journey and dont want or have time to get dirty. i check mine this way when i check oil level and clean breathers out properly at oil change time
