There was an article in the paper a couple of months ago saying that the average life of a " modern" vehicle is 14 years now.

An Austin 1100 purchased in 1965 would have it's front wings held together by Isopon,  wire mesh, and a copy of The Daily Mirror by 1968.

My 1976 Triumph 2500S was effectively a terminally rusty shell by 1983.

Ì still have a 1976 Triumph 2500S saloon in Carmine Red with no rot whatsoever. I've owned it since 1998. It does have a very sheltered life though having only done less than 60k....

My car looked stunning in Mimosa yellow just so long as you didn't poke it with anything sharp. ;) :D ;D

Perhaps your car took a trip to see  to Mr Ziebart

Just been watching Heartbeat episode and one cars in it caught my eye.  Didnt know what car it was so nipped on ECP and put the reg in but no joy.  So nipped on the gov MOT check site and it came back as a MG

MG MIDGET
Check another vehicle

Colour
Red
Fuel type
Petrol
Date registered
21 September 1953
MOT expired on
12 June 2013

History shows from 2006/13

But the bit that interests me is the car has done 56 miles, I for one dont believe this is the cars actual total mileage.

So with it being a classic car and possibly had a retore/rebuild would this mean the car can have the mileage changed on the MOT?

Not sure the word 'midget' would be used for a new car in 2021..... ::) ::) ::)

It could offend any shortarses out there..😀

We had a Triumph 2000 O/D, moved on to an 1850 Dolomite Sprint but the car I wish I could have owned would be a Triumph Stag T Top ::)

Never had chance to drive any of the 2 we had as I was too young, But I got the chance to learn in a BMW 2500 hence why I love larger cars. :y

looking back on all the cars we had in the family growing up. every one of them gone now (or at least untaxed/ un moted etc) so most likely gone.and they were all aged between 12 and 15 years ( least was our hunter which only managed 9 years and a 84 cav that only did 10)so modern cars like the omega should theoretically survive longer but i would imagine its the electrics and diagnostic stuff that fails nowadays rather than rust. most cars i remember in the 60' and 70's growing up had underseal all around the lower 6" or so ,increasing by a half inch every time you tidied it up or bought one from a used car forecourt.

sounds very nice.
i still have a few cars that i bought in the late 80's .viva and 2 cavs and they are used on rotation as dailys all year round . no issues with major corrosion as theyre checked over and repaired as/ if req every springtime .
probably used more than the omega realy as ive done less than 5000 in it since i bought it in 2015 thou it does get used every week.

There was only a short window when it was longer.
It is extraordinarily wasteful, especially when you consider just how much stuff is in modern cars. And that stuff failing is a large factor in their short lifespan.

Dolly sprint was a 2 liter 16 valve  ;)
was it a sprint look a like perhaps  :-\
I had one as one of my first cars, insurance was  :o painful  :-X
it rusted just about everywhere ,priced up replacement panels and welding but found a nice early Mk2 Cavalier instead,
so scrapped the Dolly and been playing with Vauxhall rust instead ever since  :D
though I've had a scattering of non Vauxhalls too  :-[

Yep...and quoted at 127 BHP if memory serves.
I think the 1850 Dolomite lump was designed by Saab.......but I could be wrong.

Odometers used to go back to zero once they passed 99999 miles.

but that was back when a car was lucky to go around the clock before the tin worm ate it  :y

A lot of the old stuff would have needed two decokes to get to 100k :o

The old for sale adverts would read something like......excellent runner 45000 miles new engine recently fitted.

or......50,000 miles. Engine just been had a rebore so no oil smoke. ;D

The slant four was the basis for Saab's engines. They engineered out some of the more risible design features, and built the thing to a decent standard so that the others caused fewer problems. In reality, it's a laughable design that should have been pissed down the same plughole as the liquid lunch that spawned it.

They quoted 127bhp. In the same way that Ford quoted 135 for a 3.0l Essex, and 160 for a 2.8i. They're all pure fantasy.

As bad as the engine was, it did match the car it used in; the Dolomite is small, cramped, slow, overly complex for absolutely no gain. Being the same basic bodyshell as other cheaper small Triumphs did it little favours in the market, although it is pretty. It was well down to BL's quality standards too.

I thought the sprint was quite nippy and very comfortable
though I was a spotty youth who drove like a mental case back then  :D
