Forgetting physical size for the minute (I'm sure someone will be along to state what the actual dimensions of the original equipment are), what is the power output (either in RMS or peak) of the head unit you have just bought?

Is that 45W the peak power output, or the RMS value?
Also, is that 45W in to a 4 ohm or 8 ohm impedance?

If the manual doesn't say either way, post the model number and I'll look it up for you.

Well the manufacturer isn't giving much away (no surprises there), so I'm going to err on the side of caution and assume that the claimed power output of 45W is the RMS rating.

For that, I would recommend speakers that can handle at least 90W RMS (that's 180W peak).

The other thing you want to pay attention to is speaker sensitivity.
I won't bore you with the technical details (unless you want me to), however this measurement equates (in laymans terms) to how "loud" the speaker is for any given input power.

The actual sensitivity rating is measured in the format 99dB/1W/1M
This means that for 1 Watt of input power, 99 decibels will be attained at a distance of 1 metre from the speaker. In short, the higher the number, the louder it will sound.

Are you looking for 2 way replacements, 3 way replacements, or do you want to keep to the existing format that was used (tweeter seperate from main drive unit)?

Alas I don't have a Haynes manual in front of me, so I don't know what the available dimensions are to work with in terms of drive unit size.

If somebody can give me the measurements of the existing drive units, I'll quite happily point you in the direction of aftermarket replacements that I think you should consider.

I would also recommend that you listen before you buy, because what sounds good to one person may not be agreeable with another.

I've an alpine head unit in mine, always classed them as the best on the market.
I have an ipod dock and an 8gb memory stick connected to mine.
I kept my standard speakers, but added 2 x 12" jbl subs in 1 box, with a 3000w amp.

infinity components in mine  :y

6.5 inch in the front ( the tweeter in its normal place )
5.25 in the back ( 18mm of mdf needed to pack it out )
if you look at the back of the door card, you will see a circle scored in the card about 300mm from the bottom close to the centre for the tweeters  :y

cross overs sit in the space where the armrest goes if you cut some of the polystyreen away  :y

For the record, All UK head units are always quoted in Max power, never RMS, and unless specifically stated will always be 4 Ohm capability.

Amplifiers are another matter !!

I was pretty much certain that the quoted figures would be the usual misleading crap, but 45W x 4 will always sell a lot better than 15W x 4 I guess.
