Fence Sprayers
« on: 12 February 2021, 01:41:21 »

Any good?  ???  I have a section of fence that needs repainting and was thinking about trying a pressure sprayer instead of brushes to speed the job up.   :-\

Although I'm sat listening to the howling wind and am wondering if I'll have a fence left in the morning anyway!  ::)  ;D

I use an old garden sprayer modified with a schrader valve instead of hand pump, charged from compressor.

Tried one at the MILs some years ago, they create a good quick finish  :y

But that is where the good news ends, it just doesn't last, this modern wax and water based fence paint needs forcing into the wood grain to get any decent life out of it, and so the finish with the sprayers just doesn't last.

So if your ok with re-application regularly, then no issue with the sprayer

They seem to use more than a brush.

Good multi tasking. Was he completing an I Spy book?

Yep, it is always the brush for me, although even though I wear protective clothing I still get covered myself.  :y :y :y

My ex used to do all the fencing in the past as he loved doing it, but now he has gone fence maintenance is down to me :'( :'(

Can't beat good old fashioned creosote, but unfortunately the 'fence' police will have you - if you can still breath when you've finished....

We have around 40 panels + a couple of gates which I try to treat annually don't mind doing it but do between 5-8 per day which is more than enough for me, by then it's time for a beer..🍺

Used engine oil is the top-dog.  Smells lovely on a hot summers day, too!  ;D

I put up a new fence at a rental property a couple of years ago and painted it with used Genuine GM 10W40.  I was there a few weeks ago and noticed that the water was still beading on the wood, so it'll last for years.  :y

......and presumably it is more environmentally friendly than tipping it down the drain  of your neighbour. :)
