Omega General Help / Re: Belt change time... advice

Before I become fully competent with Omegas, when I was at the "have a go, experimental" stage, I fitted a V6 cambelt kit following the Haynes manual, which said it could be done without (but would need checking afterwards).

It's only now, I know why it ran like a bag of nails!

Knowing what I know now, I would always use the correct kit.

I recon I must have done near on 30+ cambelts on the Omega for other people, and 28 of them probably weren't bang on!

Was that before or after you had done them? ;)

could you take parts of a bigger omega engine such as cams. Just a thought.

Nope, seeing as the V6 engines have only 3 cylinders per bank! They are completely incompatible.

Other than going for forced induction (mega bucks) there's no easy way to get any worthwhile increase. As previously mentioned the best and cheapest route is to sell it and buy a V6, preferably a 3 litre manual as it's the quickest retail Omega available. If that's still not quick enough you can consider throwing money at it as there's no upgrade route from there, but even then you'd be better off going for a different car.

Omega General Help / Re: BUSHES

If you are talking about the huge doughnut bushes at the front of the rear sub-frame:

1) They have quite a lot of give in them anyway so don't rush into replacing them.
2) I've not found anyone other than Vx that sell exactly the right part.
3) The part number is 90447156 and I think they're around £30 each.
4) You can jack the car and pull the bushes out with a claw hammer - there's a sort of lip like on a can of paint to allow you to do this.
5) You can push a new one in using the plate (reversed) or by using a jack.

You can do it without removing the rear sub-frame but you need to jack the car in the right place...

How about these, any good?

Omega General Help / Re: 2.5 silencer on a 3.0

You could always buy one of those Y-piece tailpipe trims from Halfords to make it look like it has two pipes  ;D

Omega General Help / Re: What does this mean/stand for?

Yep and the other ones are Multi Info Display (the most common one, trip computer & check control etc), and Triple Info Display which is the basic one which shows only temperature, radio display and time.

If i took out an engine with an automatic transmission, and i put in a manual transmission, what else would i have to change because you got the cluth, gearbox.
Also, how much do you think it would come to (price) excluding transmission?
(By the way, not that good with mechanics so if i have menchioned anything wring sorry)
Thanks,
Jamie

Gearbox, clutch, flywheel, pedal box and clutch hydraulics. Straightforward enough swap I believe.

Looks immaculate, but surely venting the crankcase to atmosphere is illegal now?

Does it matter if the omega is right hand drive and the engine has came out of a land hand drive?
Thanks,
Jamie

I wouldn't think the engine itself will have any significant differences, although you sometimes find minor changes like a different shape exhaust manifold to clear the steering gear.

How easy are these to replace on the V6??

Can drive atleast 4 miles now and the temperature gauge is still barely above the bottom, yet after its stood for a while or gone for a bit further it starts coming upto about 92...  It just takes ages to get to any sort of temperature!

It has been rather cold the last few mornings so I wouldn't think that would help.. 92-95 is around normal running temp.....
but I thought that if your thermostat was not opening it would over heat, and if it was stuck open it would never get hot :-?

As for getting to it I am sure you have to get right down into the "V".....

It will still get up to 95 degrees or so when driving round town, especially if you have to stop lots or go into lower gears. If the temperature drops off the bottom of the scale soon after getting up to speed on a motorway cruise then it's a sure sign of a stuck open stat.

Bit of a pig to change, need to remove the plenum and inlet bridge, it's at the front of the valley so not that difficult in terms of access. However you have to remove a few bolts and maybe move a pipe, both of which are reputed to be a nightmare, and the housing will probably break in the process so you should get a replacement one too. There is an uprated housing available, but you'll need longer bolts.

I haven't done this job myself, this is the info I get from reading posts on here. Isn't there a how-to? Certainly the oil cooler change guide will help with a lot of what needs to be done.

Omega General Help / Re: Coolant Lose !!!!

Each day ie 50 mlies, I seen to have lost coolant, about a cup full, a few days ago I did around trip of 650 mlies, lost just a cup full. Changed the HBV (GM part) in April, since then covered 13,000 miles, new cam belt, rollers and tensioner fitted yeserday (129,150 miles) no evidence of coolant leaks anywhere . The temp gauge is fine at 95c or lower. Anyone any ideas please, should I change the HBV again ? were should I look for a leek ?   :(
best regards
richard

Try a greengrocer's... sorry couldn't resist  ;D

I have a similar small leak with mine, and recently replaced the HBV even though the old one looked fine. No change, so I'm still trying to pinpoint it. I intend to get it pressure tested when cold which should make it easier to spot (I hope) as the water won't evaporate away.
