when I first got the car if you changed the drivers side the passengers side changed as well unless the passnerger changed theres then it went individual, untill the ign was turned off and back on.

Maybe its a diffrent set up on the newer ones,

If you push in either of the knobs on the facelift climate control the single knob takes over control of both sides. Push it again and they separate. When a single knob is active the temperature display above the other one is blanked.

Not sure about prefacelift but I would imagine there's some similar mechanism.

On the pre face lift cars the passenger's side follows the driver's side untill you press the passenger's side & then they're seperate. They become as one again after the ignition has been off for ...... er? an hour? .... can't remember. :-?

when turning the passenger side on using the driver side knob, the passenger side should come on at the same temp as the drivers and be completely independantly adjustable via its own knob, ie when both are on and you change the driver temp, the passenger will remain at whatever temp it was left on. if you turn the driver temp up, then switch the passenger side off and back on via the driver side knob, it'll come back on the same temp as the driver side

pretty certain this is the norm, its been like this in my current facelift elite and my previous facelift GLS

Correct. 40mins is the timeout with ign off iirc.

Botched wiring (ie, its always got ign on signal)?  Stuck buttons?

Botched... maybe after the other trouble...

No buttons stuck, and it turns off after about 8 seconds after the igntion is turned off
