Just went for a walk at lunch time. Crossed the foot bridge as a train was in the station to hear the fireman get a bollocking for not getting coal into the corner of the firebox.

I had that once also on a West Country Class, my reply of 'here's the f-ing shovel, you have a go at it and I will show you how to stop the loco with all coaches on the platform' was not met overly well

Now that is the skill of an engine driver.  The fireman should easily be able to look after the back corners of the firebox and the control of the injectors.  But it does take real stamina, especially in a ho summer, for the fireman to shovel a few ton of coal during their shift.  That is why it is the young, not the old, who are best suited to be firemen.
