since posting i have found out this. in the spare wheel well there is a electric contraption which i thought was some kind of fuel lift pump. but is something to do with the electric handbrake which is an automatic thing.
-
I would have thought that the important things are stud spacing and offset. Even tyre size isn't critical for the short time the wheel will be on the car. Surely an electric handbrake operates on the wheel drum only. (I stand to be corrected, of course).
I've just bought a space saver wheel for a Mazda 6 with electric handbrake and can't see any potential problems if I have to use it. I suppose I'd better try it out first though.

I agree with Bill :)
My ML came with a slimmer space saver spare & it has an electric parking/hand brake (on the disc though)
-
You do have to check that they clear the rear brake assembly, the one on the XE is a narrow full size alloy to allow just for this.
-
It seems obvious to me that the place to get one is from Citroen (or DS, as they like to think that they are a separate brand). Expensive, maybe, but at least you know it's the right one.

All motor manufacturer's should be compelled, by law, to supply a full size or space saver spare free of charge. It is ridiculous that a 'spare' is seen as an optional extra these days.
I suggest we start by stringing the head of GM and Ford up by their balls, as an example to others. :y

trouble is that some cars no longer have room to store one even you buy one as the space has often been taken up with an Adblue tank

If the world was rid of planet killing derv cars there would be no requirement for an Adblue tank.........problem solved. :)
Fortunately my Tata has a space saver spare located under the boot tray with the battery. The original owner had to tick a box and pay an extra £180 though. :-\

[/quote] My daughter's Yaris has space for a spare tyre & that was a paid for optional extra too ..... she got her's as part of the deal though because her dad 'asked nicely' but then had to involve those higher up the ladder to actually get it! ::)

or that there simply isn't room for the massive diameter of modern wheel/tyre combinations. Having a collapsible spare like some Mercs, NSXs etc doesn't help, because there still isn't room for the wheel you removed. Even the original XC90 came with a bag to cover the dirty removed wheel in the boot as it doesn't fit the cradle under the car. XC90s with the factory bodykit and tacky exhausts don't have the cradle.

In my youth I seem to recall the average family car having 13 inch wheels.

Yeah, and about 4 inches wide.....and never got stuck in the snow.

Not so good once age hardened rubber and very difficult to inflate with the pisspot compressor supplied, don't ask how I know >:(

I've fitted several, and always been impressed by how effective the compressors were. Although starting the inflation before doing anything else is a good idea.
Age hardened rubber is one of several reasons why I've refused to fit spare wheels.

My Touareg spare had never been used and had dropped off the bead hence the issue inflating, of course I didn't know this until I needed the bloody thing :-X

Is there no mention of these tyres in routine maintenance?
-
Always thought it's a damn silly idea not to provide a spare wheel, Subaru has a full size one & the Range Rover was supplied with a full size matching alloy ( brand new ) but has a space saver slung beneath.

I wonder what % of RAC/AA call outs are for flat tyres.

Quite high I would think , a lot of folk would have no idea how to change a wheel if they were fortunate enough to have one.

Quite, but I meant the increase in call outs since a bottle of glue was considered a reliable alternative to an actual tyre. Should have made myself more clear.
-
I doubt many women would have the physical strength to undo the wheel nuts....and even less inclination to try.

Especially if their tyres had been replaced at Kwikfit or the like.

The Battlebus (full sized, though steel rim) spare has a date stamp from 2001 ;D. I certainly don't fancy driving on it, even in an emergency, as its cracking.
Though do I buy a black and round, or a decent tyre. Only about £12 difference, so a no brainer really. All assuming the steel wheel isn't classed as too corroded.
-

I think I heard that the AA/RAC were setting up fleets of dedicated tyre vans, with puncture repair facilities and a small range of common tyres on board? :-\

As is my MOT man, though he says its not all down to no spare wheels, but ineptness of modern snowflakes.
-
I know my Omega[on 17" wheels]has a steel spare wheel which[I think] is 16"-size originally fitted to the earlier cars?-which is classed as a space saver in this application. My V70[also a year 2000 car] has what I'd call a proper space saver,I really must check what my '95 960 has although I suspect that's probably a space saver too.
-
Check? A space saver? Nah. I buy one, put it in it's hole, cover it up with a dog crate and loads of crap and never see it again till I sell the car.

My R Class had one of those, however the ML just has a (comparatively) skinny spare

so many that RAC patrols now carry a universal spare that you use to drive to the nearest Kwikfit(I know, but the idea is sound) and they collect it later.

My now dead :'( CDX Desmond had the standard 16" alloys but the spare, (which, fortunately, never got used) was a 15" steel. :y
-
When we had the 2.6 saloon & the 2.2 estate changed the steel space savers to matching alloys on both of them, my OCD could not cope with having odd wheels..😎

All Omega had a 15" steel spare from the factory no matter what size alloys were fitted.
-
I stand corrected then[but it is a long time since I had the wheel cover off] mine will have the 15" steel spare.
-
update - i have managed to obtain two - one is a full size exact match to my original set, but takes all the space in the boot up. toyed with the idea of making a false floor making it level with the top of the wheel, but lost far too much boot hieght. the other is a 16" space saver . (on its way still ) .that will do. :y

IME, you could just about get a 16" (225/55/16) in the saloon wheel well, though the cover didn't quite fit. A 17" (235/45/17) will just about go in the well, but no chance of getting cover on. An 18" (245/40/18), no chance.
I always treated any spare on any car as a space saver in reality, as invariably it would be a different brand, old, and different tread depth, so care had to be observed when using it. And as soon as I got home, I'd get puncture fixed, and put it all back as it was :)
-
There was a guy down the road from me that ran his Astra on the space saver for at least a month. ::)
-
I'm well acquainted with the space saver spare on my Mundano having had to fit it at least 5 times in the 2 and a half odd years of ownership as the rims leak like fook, despite having had all the tyres removed and the rims cleaned up and even had a 'puncture' fixed recently. ::) >:(
Never had this trouble with any car before... :-\

OCD got to have matching brands , when I bought my Merc 4 years ago it had four virtually new Continentals on it the spare was a Michelin which looked in good shape overall but I changed it to a matching Continental asap..

Tried fixing without success, so repair at least weekly is the current programme. ::)
Might just throw a can of goo in each tyre. See how that goes .... :-X ;D

stock GM 17" alloy wheels fit in the estate wheel well, and although the boot floor sits flat, it doesn't latch in place. Fortunately, gravity holds it down ;)
The 15" steel space saver was the stock wheel on the first, low spec, small engined Omegas.
-
Just been having a look at the spare on my sons Punto and was surprised to see its a skinny 80km/h spacesaver. The standard tyres are only 165 (or was it 175 ?) x 13 ffs.

astra H come with stupid space savers and a big spacer to fill the well void , ::)
yet you can fit a full size spare in , which I have on all ours ;D
i think it's to reduce weight for better MPG
