Fiat Ducato, what to look for?
« on: 15 May 2012, 12:51:46 »

Not technically, car chat, but stuck it here anyway.

So GrampaT is looking at getting a motorhome, he's found one he likes. A "Fiat Adria Twin", looks like its based on the Ducato. Its got a 2.3 diesel lump, which looks like the newer generation of derv lumps for vans.

Anybody know anything about them? Assume as its newish, its got a DPF & DMF? Its only got 40k miles on it.

Out of interest to save him some pennies, how hard are they to work on? Not thinking of anything serious, mainly oil changes as they appear to be key on derv engines.

Thanks in advance  :y

look after one on a motor home here,
pretty easy to work on to be honest, as you say regular oil changes key to kongevity on these,
problem with motorhomes is they are mainly used seasonly so are parked up and left the rest of year,
first thing would be an oil and filter change as soon as you get it!
cambelt is not the easiest owing to lack of room to get to it but can be done,
fuel filler pipe often leaks but is reasonably easy to change with gadget hands, I had scrapes and scratches all up me arms!!
front brakes can corrode badly(discs) and also wear owing to the weight if the thing, also fluid is never changed!!
rear brakes or at least the drum ones never seem to give trouble athough the h/b cables can sieze if not lubricated, wheel bearings on the front take a hammering but once stripped and regreased every couple of years are ok, propshaft has greae nipples! use them!!
tracking goes out easily owing to peoplke trying to get them into tight position or bumping up kerbs etc, check front tyre wear, also check all tyres for age cracking where they have been stood! common occurence and can lead to atryes with 5 mm r more tread being scrapped!

Cheers G  :y

Whats the belt life on these? Have a feeling its 8 years, or 100k?

Personally I think he should have a bigger one, the Van framed ones look very small.  :(

Assume the slightly bigger 2.8 is roughly same for working on?

Good point on brakes / age of tyres will check those over. Fairly sure there is a manufactured date on tyres.

2.8 is far better power wise and just about same economy, to be honest the one i work on has a 2.8,
forgot to say in earlier post check leisure battery is good they are expensive and check solar panels are actually charging as they do die!!
as to damp yes it can be a problem in some,
top bunk over cab can break its welds and twist the frame so check that to,
to be honest the 2.3 ducato chassis is a little small for the size of the thing
2.8 is better!! has it got a towbar? very difficult to get it legal as its at maximum weight almost with the camper conversion!

When I say look out for damp mate I mean
In every motorhome ,make sure u get the salesman
To do a damp test in front of u it will cost u a lot
Of money if u take it back in 8 months with damp

Also push push and push for everything extra
Ie tv brackets ,solar panels ,tv aerials, bike rack
These things cost a lot of money so make sure he gets a good deal
With some of these bits in on the deal
If u need any price checks (book price) let me know and I'll get
It for you ;)

Thanks again chaps, OOF strikes again.

Very good point Bucko on damp meter, I actually bought one few weeks ago for my bathroom issues. So thats come in handy, did not think to take it!

Its this:

Yes I know how expensive they are  :o

If it was me, I'd spend £15k on a Range Rover. £5k stashed for fuel and the rest on some top wack hotels!

But still, they like it, want to get best example I can for them  :)

They used to have one of the classic (80's) VW Campers, they loved it.

I take it you work at a motorhome dealer Bucko? Got a website?

Mid 80's, doing well  :)

I've tried to convince them to hotel it, found nice ones that accept dogs too. But they just prefer having their own space. As its van sized, should be much easier for them to get about in it. Just a shame, a small amount more in money gets some much bigger examples  :(
