Whilst you cannot discount the better economy (and possibly) performance of a newer car, the savings are potentially irrelevant.

£15k buys an awfully large amount of fuel,,,

11278 ltrs of Unleaded @ £1.33 ppl.

People always seem to overlook that when costing a potential purchase. Don't forget that a new car will still need servicing/taxing/insuring/tyres (potentially king expensive runflats), and last but not least, fuel. Any finance also adds to the cost, and don't forget depreciation as well. A new highpressure diesel pump could cost enough to buy a new VX V6, £1800 for a 3.2 last time I asked.

All of which is why I said to do the sums very carefully... :y

But, as TB said, it all counts for shit if she just fancies a change ::)

Same here, one thing I would continue to do is oil changes.
You got the diags equipment to reset the service intervals? ;)

The reset on those is a piece of widdle, no diagnostic tools are needed :).
What about brake service reset, need to know for a MINI

So if I've got this right, Mother T fancies a change of motor and one of the reasons is that Tunnie hasn't got the time anymore to devote to Omega maintenance?  ???  Mother T is prepared to spend up to £15,000 on said new motor with the likes of Mercedes, BMW and Range Rover bandied about.  :)

Because Tunnie is a busy boy these days and hasn't the time to help out his poor old Mum, the new car will have to go to a garage/dealer for servicing and maintenance.....  :-\

It's a bit ironic that the £15,000 car will be packed off to the garage/dealer to get fixed and maintained, yet the poor old £800 Omega has to wait until Tunnie has time!!!  :-\  Why not (and some will find this idea a bit radical!  ;D) get a good local garage to look after the Omega, if only for the urgent stuff....  ;)  :)

If its got 10% of the mileage & its 2 years old instead of 12. Quite probable its going to be fine for a few years
Well, my Mum's beemer failed its first ever MOT on 2 rear shocks. One of Mrs TB's lease cars needed the RAC on the very first day we had it.  My old, beloved Rover 25 was back in the dealers for repair the day after I got it. My bro's X5, although 7 or 8 years old now lives in North Oxford BMW, always has - hopefully the £7k on a new gearbox will finally overcome the constant drivetrain issues its always suffered.

New does not always mean more reliable ;). In fact rarely so. You know what you have done to your own, rather than what some dealer or garage has claimed to have been done. Thus its reliability increases, simply due to that.

Omega owners have the advantage of a wealth of knowledge, and a willingness to help, from OOFers. And many (but sadly not enough) members have access to full dealer level diagnostics equipment within a 1hr drive.

Better the devil you know.

Of course, if she fancies a change, all the above counts for shit ;D

Until the omega i has a run of diesels which once started would run and run.

Today i wouldnt bother with a modern diesels. The expense list starts with Dual mass flywheels, diesel particle filters, exhaust gas recirculation valves, leaking stuck injectors, variable vain turbos...

And if its a french marque, you have the designed in by the manufacturer induced labour charges. (bolts in impossible locations)

Loads of clips on You Tube showing you how to do the resets for MINI and BMW. Oh, I forgot, you don't do You Tube do you.  ;) ;D
Well if you did, you'd find the answer. Go on, we'll never know.  ;) ;D ;D

I'm thinking she needs a VXR8, if only they did an Estate version readily available here. Reckon I could convince her!

Range Rover, Range Rover, Range Rover
Who said that?
 ;D
In a nice classic dark green or blue without privacy glass for me is hard to beat. She'd be in good company with fellow RR driver's.

I don't know why you can't swing Mother Tunnie towards an Insignia 2.8V6 VXR 4X4 Tourer for around £35k.  :y :y

A brand new Audi A6 4.0 V8 Estate, something along lines of this...

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201245491699683/sort/default/usedcars/body-type/estate/engine-size-cars/4l_to_4-9l/model/a6/make/audi/onesearchad/used/onesearchad/nearlynew/onesearchad/new/postcode/tw89de/radius/1500/page/1/advert-type/standard-listing?logcode=ucnnp

She said she likes it  ::)

Feels better built, which I can't deny the feel very solid.

When she started looking at a replacement, I suggested some very nice Insignia or Mondeo Estates, found a nice Elite Insignia 2.0 CDTi, leather the works.

Her first response? "Only a 2.0? I don't want anything less than a 3.0"  :o :o :o :o :o

Something very similar to that passed me on the inside coming up Whitechapel road this evening. The lights had just turned red and he didnt feel like stopping so he gave it a bootful. It didnt half shift, and sounded very nice.
Completely the wrong place to be doing it of course. ::)

Problem is, Albs, nice as Audis are, they do attract drivers which are, at best, plonkers (albeit rich plonkers).  ;) :( :( :(
