one more thing to ask curiosity wise .
the plugs on the back (std iso) have the section populated that on a single din unit would be to accept the square blue connector from a remote cd changer ( eg blaupunkt 10disc unit )
are these wired into the car and if so for what purpose ?
From memory, yes, and for simplicity. Just because the plug is there doesn't mean that it's fully populated  ;)

i have my unit on the kitchen table all wired up . i also have a blaupunkt 10 disc changer upstairs   i may just plug it into the back and see what it does ?
awaiting spare unit otherwise to hopefully swap out the cd module on mine .
i have dismantled it from the box and after removing the top arm and guide assembly can swing out the laser on its arm and tried cleaning the lens . also replaced a couple of caps but still no go . it does its thing but nothing else !
i have a wanted ad up for a replacement or two ( or more ! for future proofing )
last weekends scrapyard trip must have seen 30 single disc units in various vauxhalls but not one single 4 disc unit !

so
fired it up on the kitchen table . the cartidge opens up and the laser / arm moves into each section in steps to check for a disc. as dg said it would.
the discs spin and you can hear some laser movement ?    so it look like it is the usual laser problem.
I would concur :y

Top 1/3rd of the ISO?  Its used for all sorts, including phone and display. I *think* the CDC connectors are present, and directly connected to the pins that the ribbon going to bottom half plug in.  At best, it would only support a Phillips 4 disc CDC3...  ...kinda bypassing the point in your case

hi . cheers for reply .
once i get a unit to play with and steal the cd changer out of i will experiment with the top unit and see what happens if i plug in a 10 disc blaupunkt unit. i have a few of these as i use them in other cars with a bkaupunkt san diego head unit . if it doesnt work its no big deal !
hopefully my ccr2006 will be ok when i get a changer in it but not got one yet !
last weekends scrapyard trip found many many single shot players but not a single 4 disc one . i have a few other yards to try and also a member on here may have one that might work .
im just 10 years too late to finding loads now by the looks of it !
just  makes you wonder what certain spares will be tricky as the years go by ?
glad i got plenty cav and viva slares back in the day . should have done the same with omega bits but walk around scrapyards reduced dramatically in the past few years .

It wont work. Not worth even bothering with.  Best case, it won't work. Worse case, due to the non consistent pinouts to the top block of the 36 pin ISO, it will let the magic smoke out...

It has to talk Phillip's protocol on the right pins, and only 4 disc variants, it doesn't even support the 6 disk variant.  Which, in Phillips terms means CDC3's control board.

I gave one out of my ruined  Desmond to Gastrokleptomaniac a few years ago. Don't know if he still has it, or even if it was any good when i gave it to him.  :-\
