Title: Won’t take much throttle & misfires – ECU?
Post by: MaxRevs on 14 July 2021, 17:10:58
I have a problem on my 2002 2.6 CDX Estate – if I use more than half throttle it starts to lurch as it cuts out, comes back in, cuts out again, until I lift off the throttle and it runs OK again. If I don’t lift off within a few seconds it suffers a sudden loss of power as it goes into limp mode. If that happens I’ll pull in and switch off for a minute or two and it restarts again.

Once you’ve gradually got it up to speed it’ll maintain motorway speeds and the mpg hasn’t deteriorated. The fault is long-standing and not intermittent.

I had it into my local garage last year but they couldn’t get to the bottom of it and said it was probably the ECU.

Additionally it’s now started missing at tickover up to 2,500rpm and the engine management light is permanently on.

I’ve read on here a number of times over the years that it’s hardly ever the ECU that’s the problem, but that garages often say it’s the ECU because they can’t figure out what else it could be. So, could it be the ECU? If not, then what else could it be?

What codes are present?

Without that basic information everything else is guessing.

In order of likelihood:

Oil or water in the plug wells.
Failing coil packs.
Failing fuel pump.
Wiring loom issue.

Sounds more like a fault within the ignition.Check and changed plugs if unkown age or more than a few years old.

Possibly 1 of he ignition coils so check when you are replacing plugs for oil etc down the plug wells as leaking oil into them from camcovers could also be a issue.

Unplugging it would prove, but without codes, we're going to get wet.

Indeed, codes will give us a start

Thanks guys but unfortunately I don’t have the codes, I’ll speak to the garage tomorrow and see if they kept a record of them. If not I’ll have to get somebody to scan the codes again – but, thinking about it, it would make sense to have an Omega expert do it and fix the problem for me.
I seem to remember we had such a fellow in the Northampton area, but I can’t remember his name. Does anyone remember and is he still around?

It's a 2.6, you can do the pedal trick to flash out the codes  :y
