Elite jacking points corroded.
« on: 01 June 2023, 16:16:13 »

Just had a friendly verbal heads up from the MOT man. So thought I'd take a look this afternoon....and yes not looking good. So the question being, is a repair to all four points a feasible option, or should I send the car for scrap? :-\

The front ones are  a straightforward job, although it does require moving the interior. But if they're bad, then the bulkhead/rail/floor sections around and near them are likely to be rotten too. And that's a car killer.

I vaguely remember the rears being a bit more complex, but extra damage is equally likely.

I NEVER jack any of our cars up on the sill/cill jacking points  :-X

without photos , and even with . it's hard to access how badly corroded your jacking points are .

as it doesn't have look pretty ,IF it needs welding ,then it shouldn't be too costly  :)

buying a newer car, which may also have issues , new insurance ,current craziness of the used car market etc etc WILL prove costly  :(

keep the Omega on the road till 2030 ;) when the Government will give us all free electric cars and solar panels to charge them  :P

Which one is it? The Blue one? In which case it has had a decent run as it has a pretty impressive mileage on it iirc...

Always worth saving them nowadays if its reasonably possible. Not many left, and they really are going up in price.

More or less anything can be repaired, just a question of at what cost.

Perhaps worth a chat with a reputable restoration company.  :-\

Thinking I might punt it around a few places, just to get an idea of costs and final results. And in all honesty I really like this Elite and it's had a fair amount of money spent on it in the past couple of years. So lets see if it's worth saving :-\

Certainly no point trying to second guess the cost. And a properly repaired car will always be an easier sell than a rusty project ;)

.

Definitely worth spending a few quid on getting the job done properly, nice vehicles & as said earlier getting rarer each day.

Doughnut at local tyre shop jacked on the sticky outy bit and put a dent in it, after me asking him not too. As I understand it this brace is only to hold the jack arm in place so it lifts the car on the sill edge bit where it won't bend.

I've just got back from Public Enemy Customs down in Fleet. They had the car for an inspection, and it's only the front jacking points  that need repairing. Also they dismissed the MOT testers comments as incorrect, and that a permanent repair is 100% feasible, also the rest of the car is extremely sound and after the repairs are finished, they are going use a high temp steam clean on the underside and then properly LanoGuard and inject all cavities, and although similar to the home DIY products, it's done with pro equipment. Also they use the Lanoguard heavy duty grease on welded seams and any other vulnerable spots, so that's a yes from me, and that should see me and the car end our days on the road together....thanks to Boris Gumps scrappage scheme....tosser! :)

Agreed, it's going  in on Tuesday, whole thing is going to take a couple of days and will have to be inspected every year and topped up if needed. I'm thinking I might well have the other two done, although at the moment they are OK, but as a precaution it would be worth it as any further rust repairs could also be done there. :-\

Car is back and new jacking points fabricated and welded in, also they had to fabricate another piece where the fuel line runs  through it....total bill for that was £225. They also did an in depth inspection  on the rest of the car, and said they found no other probs. They then did a full Lanoguard underbody treatment, and guaranteed all the work done. Total cost for everything including the welding £900. :y
