The Somme
« on: 01 July 2016, 21:36:31 »

Today marks the 100th anniversary of the first day of the Battle of the Somme where 19,240 British soldiers died on that day alone.  :'(

In Exeter, Devon, 19240 individual 12" figurines representing the fallen have been laid out to commemorate the anniversary.

Saw that on tv earlier, very moving, shame that lazy clip doesn't give a proper perspective to the piece which was much more powerful  :'(

in 1995 I was driving from Berlin to Europort and the German borders had been opened so the Dutch, French & others occupied countries could enter Germany & simulate an invasion. there were droves of vehicles all horns blaring heading towards Hanover, ( I don't think they went that far though) . for about 40k,s what we didn't see was any german vehicles going east or west. the eastern borders though didn't get theirs open.

The sheer slaughter of all those men in such a short time frame too is truly inconceivable!Such a savage and pointless waste of a generation. :'(
