Would you consider me a complete nutter if I said I am seriously considering an Alfa 166?  :-/

There is a 2001 (X) on AutoTrader, 3.0 V6 with 98k miles for £1,475.

Any thoughts?

You buy an Alfa with your heart, not your head, and yes I would, in a heartbeat :)

Oh 'dangle berries'.  I was hoping someone would tell me it's a ludicrous idea.  ;D ;D ;D

I very, very much like the 166.  Just terrified of the servicing costs.  They cant be THAT much, surely?  :-/

just look at the artwork here    http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/2a/20061105_Alfa_Romeo_166_3-11.jpg_v6.jpg&imgrefurl=http://uriverse.com/dbp/thing/Alfa_Romeo_V6_engine&usg=__AS1gbIp27_-W6cP3YlbDsluIyWg=&h=600&w=800&sz=71&hl=en&start=25&sig2=1n5Ldt5UpvRO00fZw26mbQ&zoom=1&tbnid=ntRx6n-VTaXcDM:&tbnh=117&tbnw=168&ei=aI32Ta2QL4aAhQe76d3dBg&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dalfa%2B166%2Bv6%2Bengine%26hl%3Den%26biw%3D1280%26bih%3D685%26gbv%3D2%26tbm%3Disch&itbs=1&iact=hc&vpx=303&vpy=354&dur=11333&hovh=194&hovw=259&tx=150&ty=111&page=2&ndsp=24&ved=1t:429,r:19,s:25&biw=1280&bih=685

I know other's with Focus's, and they love them.  When I drive them, the age old problem of inconsistency in the bends comes in (unless cornering on the limit).

A ST peeved me off the other day, doing the stunt of lastminute.com, cutting everyone else up on the motorway and slip road in the process.  So I took it as a challenge  ::)

There is no doubt, in a rolling start in a straight line, the ST is rapid, but this idiot coun't get it around the roundabout, and the power down, and I left him for dust. He was about 4 cars back when we got off the roundabout, and never did catch me up on dual carriageway before I turned off about 10m later...

Not an ST or broken or the driver was not even trying. No comparision between an ST and the most well preserved Omega. Chip an ST and dont even bother, they are that rapid. And pretty good around corners too.

I know the later 3.2 Alfa engine uses a GM cylinder block, I'd guess the earlier 2.5/3.0 were too?

I also like the alfa.
Only thing I dont like about it is the central column, well actually stereo.
When that thing goes wrong what to put instead of it and keep the looks of the car  :o

I reckon the only reason most people buy a Ford Focus is because they're the type who've "always bought Fords", and their level of automotive discernment is such that they weren't put off by the utterly dire Escort Mk 3/4/5/6 / Orion that they probably had before it. ::)
Yep.  Got a 2002 Focus.  It's not too bad.  Keeps going faithfully. Has working air-con (Fords are good on air-con) has a heated screen (beats the Omega off the drive on a winter's morning VERY easily).

Had an XR3, XR3i (from new, then K&N/Piper/Janspeeded), XR2, Mk1 Fiesta 1.3Ghia (from new), MkII Escort estate, Granada 2.8i Ghia X Executive, Anglia 107E (Van), MkIII Escort 1.3, Orion, MkIV Escort 1.6.

Perfectly useable cars and many were great fun.

Panic over, people!

I spoke to the bloke who I swapped with, and after a bit of bargaining, I was able to swap back.

Basically, I brimmed the tank on the Focus and he reluctantly agreed to return my car.

Just drove it to the pub for a quick pint and I sat in the Garden just looking at it as if to say 'sorry' for letting it go.

Over the past few days, I have driven everything from an S type Jag (3.0) to a BMW 730 (admittedly a 1998 model) to a new Insignia, and none of them compare.  That's definitely not fan-boy speak, just my humble opinion.

I sure am glad to have the Omega back!  :y

And relax!  :)
